This image of the Earth's limb is being taken using a camera on board that supports a Tethered satellite science objective referred to as top the Tether optical phenomena experiment that will allow scientists to answer a variety of questions about Tether dynamics and some of the optical effects that are created by the Tethered satellite. Mission Specialist Morizio Kaylee, a member of the Red Team which is currently awake and supporting activities on board Columbia, is operating the top experiment with assistance. From the science community located at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, Morizio Kaylee is joined on the Red Team by pilot Scott Horowitz and payload specialist in Berto Guidoni. In just about an hour and a half they will be joined by their counterparts on the white team commander Andy Allen and Mission Specialist Jeff Hoffman, the blue team of payload commander Franklin Chang Diaz and Mission Specialist Claude Nicoleier is still asleep. They have about four and a half hours remaining in their sleep schedule. Throughout this flight both during Tethered satellite operations and during US microgravity payload operations, once Tethered satellite is concluded, the crew members will be working in staggered shifts so they can support 24 hour science operations.
