As it is referred to, the purpose of this experiment is to determine the effects of microgravity upon the cognitive or thinking skills that are critical to the success of any operations in space. The principle objective of Paul's is to try and distinguish between the effects of microgravity on information processing skills and those calls by fatigue. The performance test that Commander Henders are performing right now is being conducted on a laptop computer. There is a series of tests that have been designed to help measure astronauts' responses to such things as rotated images, letter sequences, some simple math calculations and spatial patterns, as well as just simple recollection of numbers. The subject's ability to track an unstable object on computer screen will also be part of some of the tests. And perhaps the most challenging test for each of the subjects will be to perform two tasks at the same time, rapidly switching attention between the two tasks. Each subject has performed a series of tests prior to the mission to establish a baseline for being able to compare data that is obtained on orbit and during the mission.
