LY D © oF VE\N> FILLING WITHOUT DRILLING DUTCH PROFESSOR FAKED DATA FOR YEARS prominent Dutch social psychologist, who once claimed to have shown that the very act of thinking about eating meat makes people behave more selfishly, has been found to have faked data throughout most of his career. In one of the worst cases of scientific fraud on record in the Netherlands, a review committee made up of some of the country's top scientists has found that Professor Diederik Stapel, of the University of Tilburg, systematically falsified data to achieve the results he wanted. The university has fired the 45- year-old Stapel and plans to file fraud charges against him, said spokesman Walther Verhoeven. This year, Stapel co-authored a paper published in Science magazine which said that white people are more prone to discriminate against black people when they encounter them in a messy environment, such as one containing litter, abandoned bicycles and broken sidewalks. Although the paper that linked 4 Reecarchers at the University of Leeds have discovered a pain-free way of tackling dental decay that reverses the damage of acid attack and rebuilds teeth as new. Their solution is to arm dentists with a peptide- based fluid that is literally painted onto the tooth's surface. The peptide echnology is founded on nowledge of how the tooth orms in the first place, and it stimulates regeneration of he tooth defect. "This may sound too good o be true, but we are essentially elping acid-damaged teeth to regenerate themselves. It is a totally natural non-surgical repair process and is entirely pain-free, too," said Professor Jennifer Kirkham, from the University of Leeds Dental Institute, who has led development of the new echnique. The study is being funded by credentis AG, which has licensed the echnology and is preparing to introduce the P11-4 peptide fluid to dentists worldwide. ‘Source: ScienceDaily.com, 23 August 2o11, http://tinyurl.com/300hym8) houghts of eating meat with antisocial behaviour was met with scorn and disbelief when it was publicised in August, it took several doctoral candidates whom Stapel was mentoring to unmask him. The review panel noted that Stapel ad enjoyed a position of prestige as a professor and head of his department and that he'd had access to subsidies and funding for is projects as a result of the fraud. One year at a New Jersey state prison: US$44,000. Prison and college "are the two most divergent paths one can take in life", says infographic researcher Joseph Staten. Whereas one is a_ positive experience that increases lifetime earning potential, the other is a near dead-end, which is why Staten found it striking that the lion's share of government funding goes towards incarceration.
