Editorial W; have many interesting articles in this edition, and this time we start with Libya and some perspectives that even astute NEXUS readers may not have picked up. The "rebel uprising” in Libya was actually an initiative by outside forces using media manipulation to make it look as if there was a popular resistance against Colonel Gaddafi inside Libya. But there was no popular uprising in Libya: it was completely fabricated, right down to the stories of Gaddafi strafing people with warplanes and massacring thousands of civilians. It didn't happen. Such is the power of modern media when used against nations. It is no surprise to NEXUS readers that the western mainstream media act as a propaganda mouthpiece for western foreign policy—right up to spreading lies about any country on demand, so as to garner western public support for attacks or invasions. But this year has seen the development of the role of the Arab media in also propagating lies in order to justify actions by various Arab states. Al Jazeera is of particular interest here because it gained worldwide attention ollowing the 9/11 attacks. The western perception was that Al Jazeera was some sort of independent Arab media source that was hostile to the West. Well, nothing could be further from the truth. Al Jazeera is owned by the state of Qatar. To be polite, Qatar is an oil-rich puppet dictatorship and was the main source of finance or the rebel invasion of Libya. It paid for Taliban and Al-Qaeda fighters to come rom far and wide, spearhead the "uprising" in Libya and fight side by side with ATO forces against Gaddafi. In order to speed up the invasion and demoralise the millions of Libyans who opposed the "uprising" (the media didn't tell you that 90 per cent of Libyans opposed it), Al Jazeera faked TV footage of Green Square, Tripoli. It created film sets and hired locals to yell and dance with happiness, and then sent this to the world media as "evidence" that Libyans were welcoming the rebels into their capital. Not ‘0 be outdone, the BBC joined in with its own "live" shots of Libyans dancing for joy at being liberated in Tripoli. Trouble is, the BBC was screening old film footage of a large crowd, in India, waving Indian flags and dressed in Indian clothing. So why did the West attack Libya in 20112? How many of you knew of Gaddafi's determination to sever Africa's oppressive ties with western financial institutions such as the IMF and the World Bank? Gaddafi was not only in the process of creating the African Investment Bank (providing interest-free loans) and the African Monetary Fund, thus eliminating the IMF's role, he was also in the planning stages of creating a new, gold-backed African currency that would seriously weaken the US by undermining the dollar. Libya's vast crude oil reserves and fresh-water aquifers are just the icing on the cake, and go to rewarding the main participants. Speaking of the evening news, do you ever wonder why the last item is always a cute, feel-good story? It's the "sugar coating" so that you "swallow" the message and perceptions planted in the main news stories, especially the international ones. The cute story at the end ensures that you digest the nasty-tasting news, which then goes to reinforcing the world view that you are expected to have. One very important article in this edition is the Peace in Space Treaty initiative by Dr Carol Rosin. This is probably the most significant treaty you will ever see, and it is something you all can support and make a difference with, if you so choose. Please read the treaty, visit the website and make the choice to care enough to do something. This is literally considered the last chance that mankind will have to put this sort of treaty into place. This treaty goes further than just banning space- based weapons: it opens the way to the sort of future that every one of us wants. Until next time... EDITOR Duncan M.
