REVIEWS & KEVIEWS BOOKS Reviewed by Ruth Parnell TWILIGHT OF THE GODS by Erich von Daniken New Page Books, NJ, USA, 2010 ISBN 978-I-60163-141-I (222pp tpb) Available: www.newpagebooks.com n his 24th work of non-fiction since the release of his best-selling 1968 book Chariots of the Gods?, Erich von Daniken focuses on ruins in the Bolivian Andes, 4,000 metres above sea level: the ancient stone cities Tiwanaku and the nearby, better preserved, Puma Punku. With reference to late 19th to early 20th century findings (including those of engineer Arthur Posnansky), most of which were pilloried in their day, von Daniken contends that the original Stone Age inhabitants of the region did not have the technological means to extract and tool gigantic stones made of hard igneous diorite. These monolithic structures could only have been created by visiting extraterrestrials ("the gods") (as von Daniken has claimed over the years) way back in antiquity, if the elaborate calendars that arguably track back 17,000 years are any guide. The ancient astronauts are returning to complete their missions and retrieve artefacts, von Daniken reckons, and he interprets one of the Mayan calendars as saying that December 2012 is the expected arrival date. With side trips into astrophysics, anthropology as well as genes and memes, von Daniken concludes that we're soon in for "a ‘god shock’ of major proportions". Time will tell! musings on paranormal phenomena by geologist Dr Robert Schoch, reflections on the Egypt Code by Robert Bauval, a challenge to the editors of the journal Archaeology by Egyptology researcher John Anthony West, and thoughts on the possibility hat cosmic rays have affected human evolution by Andrew Collins. Other contributors include Edward Malkowski, Mark Booth, Richard Hoagland, Walter Cruttenden, Scott Creighton, Badrinaryan Badrinaryan, Gary David and Flavio Barbiero. Altogether, the reflections of these rontier investigators provide a big- picture perspective on the cycle of human existence which challenges orthodox knowledge. If you've not read their works before, this anthology is an ideal place to start.
