REVIEWS SENSITIVE PERMACULTURE by Alanna Moore Python Press, Castlemaine, Aust, 2009 ISBN 978-0-9757782-2-7 (137pp tpb) Available: www.pythonpress.com Gaidescribed animist and geomancer Alanna Moore covers much more than permaculture alone in her seventh book. While she has great advice on the ethical design of sustainable culture, she also shares an energetic, loving approach to sustainable land planning, acknowledging the nature spirits that provide dynamic force in the landscape. Moore divides her time between Australia and Ireland, and so has wisdom to impart from the indigenous traditions of both lands. Informing her approach is the idea of sacred custodianship of country, which puts a spiritual perspective on such things as assessing land capability, selecting a home site and designing and building a living home. Moore is as comfortable with devas and fairies as she is with dealing with waste and pollution, pests and weeds. Read about harmonising your space in line with natural energies, co-operating with the land and its creatures, building sensitive earthworks and creating a permaculture paradise on a budget. Moore explores the Green Man 72 * NEXUS REVIEWS @ concept and shows how we can attune to the spirit of our own household as well as save seeds for a sustainable eco-future. Her book is an adventure in magical and practical Earth awareness. THE PURPOSEFUL UNIVERSE by Carl Johan Calleman, PhD Bear & Co., Rochester, VT, USA 2009 ISBN 978-1-59143-104-6 (350pp tpb) Avail: BearandCompanyBooks.com Tr universe came into being with order and purpose, with a Central Axis akin to a Cosmic Tree of Life with three dimensions of space, the necessary prerequisites to spark creation. So says physical biologist Dr Carl Johan Calleman in his new book, the last in a trilogy on the Mayan calendar (see review, 11/04). Inherent in Dr Calleman's unified theory of physical and biological evolution is the notion that, contrary to the scientific norm, the universe does have purpose, direction and meaning and is imbued with beauty and intelligence. Indispensable to understanding evolution is Mayan cosmology with its cosmic forces of nine Underworlds and 13 Heavens. He sees the Mayan calendar as an expression of the time factor in creation and evolution. To Dr Calleman, the microcosmic quantum scale is evident on the grand cosmic scale. He regards the universe as a hierarchica organisation of Halos generated by spinning Trees of Life, ranging from the universal scale all the way down to elementary particles. Indeed, randomness cannot cause life to emerge; in terms of biochemistry, it does not generate meaningful information as a template upon which molecules and cells can arise. Cellular life emerged as a result of a panspermia of wave forms, and it shares DNA as a basic molecular component because all life-forms have a common origin in the Cosmic Tree of Life. Dr Calleman also sees this Tree as the root of beauty in aesthetics, mathematics and geometry. This is biology with soul.
