GLOBAL NEWS Manuacturers are creating combinations of fat, sugar and salt which are so tasty that many people cannot stop eating them, even when full. David Kessler, former head of the US Food and Drug Administration, has warned that snacks, cereals and ready meals are devised by food scientists to act on the reward centres of the brain in the same way as tobacco. He says manufacturers are seeking to trigger a "bliss point" when people eat certain products, leaving them hungry for more. A study carried out by Kessler with researchers at Yale University, using functional magnetic resonance imaging techniques, showed tha about 50 per cent of obese people and 30 per cent of those who are overweight were prone to so-called "excessive activation". “The right combination of tastes triggers a greater number o neurons, getting them to fire more," said Kessler. "The message to ea becomes stronger, motivating the eater to look for even more food." In other research, scientists have found that different combinations o fat, sugar and salt trigger the release of neurotransmitters in the brain's pleasure centres. The most powerfu combination involved sucrose (table sugar) mixed with chocolate and alcohol—the same mixture found in desserts such as tiramisu. Kessler said: "Many of us have what's called a ‘bliss point'—the point at which we get the greatest pleasure from sugar, fat or salt. As more sugar is added, food becomes more pleasurable until we reach the bliss point, after which it becomes too sweet and the pleasure drops off. The same thing happens with fat and salt." At the optimum point, food stimulates many people's appetites instead of suppressing it, according to Kessler. Tony Ryall, has asked Ministry of Health officials to advise him urgently on issues raised about a "swine flu" vaccine produced by Baxter International Inc. In an open letter dated 30 June to all members of the New Zealand House of Parliament, Penny Bright, media spokesperson for the Water| Pressure Group, a judicially recognised public watchdog for Metrowater, water and Auckland regional governance matters, raises a series of| questions and concerns about the safety of the vaccine. She demands to now whether Baxter vaccine products are currently being used in New Zealand for "swine flu", "bird flu" or any other type of flu. Bright highlights the fact that Baxter is currently facing criminal charges or producing contaminated "bird flu" vaccine—charges that date back to February when it became known that the company had sent out 72 ilograms of live “bird flu" virus supplied by the World Health Organization in the northern winter of 2009 to 16 laboratories in four countries. The charges, filed by journalist Jane Burgermeister of Austria, claim that clear evidence exists that the pharmaceutical company and international government agencies actively conspired in producing, developing, manufacturing and distributing biological agents classified as the most deadly bioweapons on Earth in order to trigger a pandemic and cause mass death. Last December, the Austrian branch of Baxter sent a batch of ordinary human H3N2 flu, altered so it could not replicate, to AVIR Green Hills Biotechnology, also in Austria. In February, a lab in the Czech Republic| working for Avir alerted Baxter that, unexpectedly, ferrets inoculated with a sample from the shipment had died. It was discovered that the sample contained live H5N1, which was to be used by Baxter to make vaccine. Baxter claimed that the two batches were mixed by error, and called the incident a simple "accident". According to an article in the Times of India on 6 March, Markus Reinhard of Baxter said that no one had been infected because the H3N2 was andled at a high level of containment. But world-renowned virologist Ab Osterhaus of Erasmus University in the Netherlands has stated emphatically that great lengths must be taken to make sure this kind of hing does not happen again. In May, Osterhaus told participants at Europe's largest conference on infectious diseases that the outbreak of| influenza A HINI is without question the most important event of the past 40 years in human influenza. He stressed that the current HINI hreat is serious. Accidental release of the mixture of live H5N1 and H3N2 virus sub- ypes could have resulted in extremely dire consequences. Although H5N1 does not easily infect people, H3N2 does. Anyone exposed to a mixture of the two strains and simultaneously infected with both could serve as a human incubator for a hybrid virus able to transmit easily to other people and their communities. This is the outcome feared by many scientists in the USA for the autumn flu season, and is the stated reason for the push to get everyone vaccinated, even if by force. In her open letter, Bright asks members of the New Zealand Parliament to consider whether they would consent to being injected with a "swine flu" vaccine produced by Baxter while it is under investigation for charges that it produced contaminated "bird flu" vaccine.
