REVIEWS REVIEWS @ The dichotomies seen in our thoughts, feelings and even politics (e.g., left vs right) are founded in our hybrid genetics, says Gooch. He urges us to embrace our diametrically opposed genetic traits if we want to live in harmony. THE NEANDERTHAL LEGACY by Stan Gooch Inner Traditions, Rochester, VT, 2008 ISBN 978-159477185-9 (I82pp tpb) Available: www.InnerTraditions.com Hore as we know it is the result of crossbreeding between male Cro-Magnons and female Neanderthals, says psychologist and paranormal researcher Stan Gooch. The hybrid species had abilities beyond which either genetic parent possessed. Recent findings from genetics tend to support this idea, but Gooch believes that the originally small input of Neanderthal genes has steadily increased over tens of thousands of years. A key difference between the two species, Gooch claims, is that the Neanderthals had a much larger cerebellum—indeed, a separate brain connected with the unconscious Self and with dreaming and psychic states, but barely given serious attention by scientists. Gooch gives many examples of Neanderthal-type customs and behaviours that Cro- Magnon types across all cultures have tried to outlaw. He suggests, for instance, that the taboo on having contact with menstruating girls and women was meant to negate the influence of the Moon-worshipping, female-led Neanderthal culture. DR SHUKER'S CASEBOOK by Dr Karl P. N. Shuker CFZ Press, North Devon, UK, 2008 ISBN 978-1-905723-33-I (309pp tpb) Available: www.cfz.org.uk or this compilation, English cryptozoologist Dr Karl Shuker explores not just weird and wonderful animals but ancient mysteries and strange phenomena from around the world. To start, Dr Shuker looks at cats with "wings", a physical anomaly that he thinks is related to an inherited skin condition, feline cutaneous asthenia. Sightings of other anomalous creatures that he mentions herein are not so easily explained: mermen, a bat-winged monkey-bird, reptilian entities from outer and inner space, lake monsters, serpent-headed panthers, unicorns, the Aboriginal Dreamtime beast the mirrii, and more. Widely travelled, Dr Shuker has inspected numerous artefacts of the ancient world, including the moai statues of Easter Island, a dinosaur 70 ¢ NEXUS eatured on the Ishtar Gate of Babylon, a stegosaur glyph at Angkor Wat in Cambodia, the formerly singing Colossus of Memnon in Egypt, and the Kukulkan pyramid at Chichén Itz4, Mexico, which creates a quetzal-like chirping echo. He also documents strange lights, from ball ightning and orbs to the Australian min-min, as well as curious airborne phenomena such as falling fish and stones. Dr Shuker describes "sky beasts", somewhat like organic UFOs, he most famous examples being the "critters" photographed in infrared by scientist Trevor Constable since 1958. He also considers our solar system's allegedly missing planets plus the crop circle mystery in his extraordinary casebook. A must for ans of Forteana in all its forms. Dr SHOES Satna .
