IODINE: Why You Need It, Why You Can't Live Without It by David Brownstein, MD Med. Alternatives Press, USA, 2006, 2ed ISBN 978-0-9660882-3-6 (197pp tpb) Available: http://www.drbrownstein.com An of the world's people live in iodine-deficient areas, and an epidemic of iodine deficiency is affecting millions. Strangely, in the 1980s, the commercial bak- ing industry swapped iodine for bromine as an anti-caking agent. Bromine, a toxic halide with no health benefit to us, binds to iodine/iodide receptors, inhibiting iodine utilisation. The same iodine-rejecting effects are seen with chlorine and fluorine, yet both are used to treat water supplies. Michigan-based family physician and holistic practitioner David Brownstein, MD, has assembled a wealth of data on iodine/ iodide in his book, and this second edition has two new chapters on the latest research, e.g., the use of iodine in treating breast can- cer. He's been working on the Iodine Project for over six years, including with Guy Abraham, MD, who inspired him ini- tially and contributed the prefaces to the first and second editions (a third edition is now out). Brownstein has tested/treated more than 3,000 patients with iodine—over 95 per cent of them presenting with low iodine lev- els. Not only does iodine have antibacterial, antiparasitic and antiviral actions, but it can treat thyroid disorders like goitre, ADD, cancers, autoimmune problems, migraines and many other conditions. Iodine is essen- tial in the production of thyroid hormones and all the other hormones in the body. Dr Brownstein explains in simple terms why we can't live without iodine. He covers the different forms of iodine and iodide JUNE — JULY 2008 @ REVIEWS compounds and why Lugol's solution, con- taining both inorganic iodine and potassium iodide, works as a supplement; e.g., the thy- roid takes up iodine from the iodide salt, and breast tissue absorbs the elemental iodine. He considers iodised salt, where only 10 per cent of the iodine is bioavailable, and foods like seaweed that are rich in the element. He also gives guidelines on dosage and presents case histories. We owe it to ourselves and our families to be informed about this miss- ing link in our diets and how to utilise it. Dr Matthias Rath, had developed a "unified therapy" for treating heart disease with high doses (6-18 grams) of ascorbate (sometimes sodium ascorbate) combined with the amino acid lysine (2-6 grams) daily. This ascorbic acid dosage is way above the anti-scurvy RDA of 60-75 mg, yet there's no evidence that such a high dosage is dangerous. The therapy is based on observations that the lesions that develop on arteries are pre- cursors to atherosclerosis; they signify that production of collagen, which is dependent on adequate vitamin C levels, has been com- promised. When vitamin C and collagen decline, the body compensates by raising levels of the cholesterol lipoprotein (a), or Lp(a), which causes plaque build-up but has lysine receptors.
