Interview with Joshua Shaw ... By Karen Graham By Karen Graham JS: When they know the facts, people will always choose ELANRA. It's the world's only therapeutic ioniser able to produce a continuous supply of negative ions of oxygen that are small a” . ' . enough to be inhaled, so it's a totally unique device. Some other . JS: Yes, but It's another anniversary also. It's 41 years since I ionisers can produce negative ions, but they are the large ions that first became involved with tonisers. : can't be breathed in, so those machines are only useful as air KG: That's a while ago. I thought this was 21st century cleaners. They have no direct beneficial effects on the body. You KG: Joshua, you've just turned 70. Congratulations, that's a milestone in anyone's life. technology. a ; can find all this information on our website, which I always urge JS: Well, the technology may be, but the idea is not new. I'll tell people to do. Read all the facts, then make up your own mind. you how it began. In 1961 I opened Australia's first discount store KG: Do we normally breathe in negative ions? in Sydney and I was offered a range of electrical goods which I refused to market because they carried no guarantee. Among those goods was an ioniser. When I asked what it was for, I was told it was to relieve heat stress. I had it operating in my office and almost the balance in nature is 5 positive to 4 negative. Unfortunately, everyone who came in remarked on the fresh, clean atmosphere. man has destroyed that balance in much of our world. Then in 1967 I had an accident involving boiling water which left KG: How has the balance been destroyed? me with third degree burns. These healed remarkably quickly and my doctor couldn't believe I was left JS: Yes, they are created by ultraviolet light, cosmic rays, water and wind pressure, but most especially by the breakdown of radioactivity in the earth's crust. Positive ions are also created and JS: Replacing forests with cities, creating air pollution, pumping : . ~ ' ' conditioned air into buildings and without any scarring. sol asked nm It S the world S only homes, and filling our lives with what causes scarring and he said simply eee appliances tha trical fields ‘bacteria’. I remembered then that I'd therapeutic loniser able to Dh tances tat the lectsical charee been told the ioniser killed 95% of produce a continuous generated by synthetic materials in airborne germs and I was so impressed I decided to import ionisers into Australia supply of negative ions of carpets, clothing and almost everything we use. As a result, positive ions to sell. Unfortunately, it took forever to A ' : overcome the litical red tape oxygen that are small dominate and nature's balance is lost. . : P pte P ° Among other effects, this excess of surrounding the use of ionisers in enough to be inhaled. positive ions can trigger the body to Australia and it wasn't until 1978 that they finally went onto the market. Now although these machines were the very best available at that time, we found that any apparent beneficial effects they had soon stopped. When we investigated the reason we found that the ions they produced were not biologically active. KG: Why weren't they? JS: We used mass spectrometers to discover the species of bio- active ions found in nature. We also discovered that the speed at which is ions are produced governs their size. Small negative ions of oxygen had to attain a speed of 1.9 centimetre volts per second (1.9 cm2/Vs). Unless that speed is achieved the only ions produced are large or medium in size. They cannot be breathed in and simply keep the air clean. Also ions of nitrous oxide and other harmful gases can be produced. KG: How do you tell if ions are biologically active? JS: Dr Albert Krueger had already done studies in the USA which showed that small negative ions of oxygen enhanced the immune system of laboratory mice. When the mice were not receiving a balance of positive and negative ions, they became lethargic and suffered from illnesses. Following on his discoveries, I later sponsored eight years of research at La Trobe University on immune system function which discovered the bio-active ions of oxygen produced by our ioniser increased the production of immunoglobulin A (igA), a prime constituent of the immune system. Armed with this confirmation of the bioactivity of small air ions, we went on to develop the ELANRA in 1985 and it went onto the market in 1992. They're now sold all over the world. KG: Can I ask how many you've sold? JS: It's in the tens of thousands. And do you know, in all those years we've only had 57 ionisers returned. KG: Why do you think all those people chose to buy ELANRA and not some other brand? release abnormal amounts of serotonin and histamine. KG: And what effect does that have? JS: These substances have many functions, some not clearly understood, but to put it simply, serotonin is a key factor in mood and general well-being. Histamine, as most people know, will in excess produce symptoms of allergy, such as hay fever, headache and rashes. KG: So extra negative ions in the air will cure just about anything? JS: No, not at all. ELANRA is not a miracle cure for everything that ails you. What it does is to help restore your body to normality so that all the body's systems can operate at an optimal level. KG: Enabling the body to fight off infection? JS: Yes, the body will always try to heal itself, given the right circumstances and environment. But to go one step further, the ELANRA also destroys up to 95% of airborne bacteria before you even get a chance to breathe them in. This has been demonstrated y scientific tests carried out in laboratories all over the world, including Australia. A year-long study by the University of Leeds at St James's Hospital in the UK found that ionisers placed in the Intensive Care Unit significantly reduced infections by eliminating 100% of the ighly resistant aceinetobacter from the air. You can read the whole interesting story on our website. Now isn't it a shame that operating theatres at several hospitals ere were recently shut for a time because the surgeons were so fearful of contamination? If they'd been able to access information about these findings in the UK - which incidentally were reported in New Scientist magazine — they would have realised there is an answer to this problem. KG: So why aren't the benefits of ionisation more widely ublicised? It's the world's only therapeutic ioniser able to produce a continuous o supply of negative ions of oxygen that are small enough to be inhaled. 18 = NEXUS APRIL — MAY 2008 www.nexusmagazine.com
