A hand-picked group of approx. 150 Iraqis, with some Marines, was allowed into the sealed-off area. A US mil- itary vehicle pulled down the statue. The Pentagon wanted journalists to sell this occupation as "liberation" to people in the US and around the world. In fact, the United States Armed Forces psychological operations motto boasts: "Win the mind, win the day!" The wrecking of the Saddam statue was part of a psy-ops media campaign.
