ALIEN ARTIFACTS IN AMERICAN HANDS IN THE LATE 1930s? by George A. Filer © August 2002 William E. Jones of the Center for UFO Studies (CUFOS) writes:"I thought your readers should be aware of the Cordell Hull story that alienartifacts were in our hands in 1939." In early December 1999, CUFOS received a letter from the daughter of theReverend Turner Hamilton Holt: "Today I want to share some knowledge that has been, by request, kept secret in ourfamily since sometime in World War II.This concerns something my father wasshown by his cousin Cordell Hull, theSecretary of State under [US President]Franklin Roosevelt. My father, who wasyoung, brilliant and sound of mind, told usthis story because he didn't want the infor-mation to be lost. "One day when my father was in DC, Cordell swore him to secrecy and took himto a sub-basement in the US Capitol build-ing and showed him an amazing sight: (1)four large glass jars holding four creaturesunknown to my father or Cordell; (2) awrecked round craft of some kind nearby. "My father wanted my sister and I to make this information known long after heand Cordell were dead, because he felt itwas a very important bit of information. We have researched your group and feel it is the most reliable group in the country. We hope that you will research and searchthis information. The jars with creatures informaldehyde and the wrecked craft aresomewhere! "Cordell said they were afraid they would start a panic if the public found outabout it." "Sincerely, "Lucile Andrew, Ashland, Ohio" Cordell Hull was one of the greateststatesmen of the 20th century, with absolutely no apparent reason to tell thisstory unless it were true, especially at atime when stories of flying saucers andtheir alien drivers had not yet become partof our culture. Hull was an elected US Senator (1931–1937), was Chairman of theDemocratic National Committee, andbecame the Secretary of State underPresident Franklin D. Roosevelt in March1933, the longest-serving Secretary in UShistory when he resigned in 1944 becauseof ill health. He was also offered the VicePresidency and, in 1945, he won the 1945Nobel Peace Prize. Reverend Holt and Cordell Hull were both born in Pickett County and werecousins and friends. Holt received hisdoctorate in theology from AshlandTheological Seminary, and was a minister at the Shenandoah Christian Church inGreenwich, Ohio. He was a communityleader, and he wrote a book entitled Life's Convictions . He married Vina May Clark and they had three daughters. Two of the daughters claim their father had told them about the "creatures".Lucile's original letter essentially tells thestory as her father told it to her when shewas a teenager. Unfortunately, Lucile said that she was too young really to pay much attention towhat her father told her, but Allene—themother of Eloise, the co-author of thisstory—was told the same story as her sis-ter. Both sisters assured us that theyremember the stories independently. Reverend Holt described the entities in the glass jars as "creatures", a term com-mon for his day. He never referred to themas "aliens" or "extraterrestrials", and henever said where they came from. Lucile stated that his experience hap- pened in the "late 1930s", probably 1939.The material that was nearby the less-than-four-foot-tall creatures was described as"silver metallic". She also remembers hereferred to the material as being a "vehicle"that appeared to have been taken apart andwas "in pieces". He said the colour of thismaterial wasn't a colour that he had seenbefore, but for the lack of a better word he OCTOBER – NOVEMBER 2002 www.nexusmagazine.com NEXUS • 65
