Editorial t never ceases to amaze me how people can have such strong opinions about things they know nothing about! I have lost the respect of more than one "friend" simply because I've published information they don't agree with. And this is not information they have checked, mind you, but information they don't want to agree with. Sometimes I hear from people saying that they think our health articles are cutting-edge, but asking why we have to put UFO material in the same issue and destroy our credibility. Then there are letters from UFO researchers saying that they find the alternative health articles depressing. It is a shame they can't see how interrelated it all is. Recently I've engaged in debate (on various subject-specific discussion lists like CIA-drugs) with people who happily believe that elements of the US intelligence community organised the September 11 attacks via remote-controlled planes and then destroyed the towers using secret Tesla-type weapons, but cannot possibly consider that AIDS is man-made or that HIV doesn't cause AIDS (see previous NEXUS articles). I've come across some leading conspiracy researchers who drink Diet Coke, think vaccinations are safe and effective, and eat junk food from fast-food outlets. And I've debated with science intellectuals who (correctly) tell me that the man-made climate change theory is bogus, but who also insist that UFOs cannot possibly exist because "nothing can go faster than the speed of light". Closed-minded attitudes can be found as much among the "alternative" as the "mainstream" researchers. I remember being at one prestigious UFO conference in Sydney in the early 1990s, where a particularly well-known UK-based UFO researcher told the stunned audience that the only genuine crop circles are the round ones, because UFOs are round and would therefore leave only circular impressions in the ground. According to her viewpoint, this meant that all the complex formations were man-made and therefore hoaxes! This issue, we have a round-up of our favourite formations from the latest crop circle season. Some interesting trends: there were fewer formations in the UK, but more in other European countries; and there were several pictorial images, including the most mysterious formation yet—an alien holding out a message in ASCII code. If you are reading this and you think that all crop circles are hoaxes, think again. There are plenty of stunning formations which would have been impossible for people to create on site. Ihave spent an increasing amount of time over the years examining climate change research. A longstanding greenie, I was among the first to yell out about the ozone hole and greenhouse effect. In fact, when I first told friends and colleagues about the ozone hole back in the early/mid-1980s, I may as well have been talking about UFOs for all the looks of disbelief they gave me. And now, as with so many other subjects—Sai Baba, soybeans and so on—I find myself at odds with the opinions I had before I actually researched further. Certainly, the cli- mate is changing and we continue to pollute the air and water (which should not be happening), but I find problems with the theory that human interference is the sole cause of climate change. In my view, the climate change that the planet is experiencing is triggered by solar activity (the current solar maximum should have begun to wane two years ago but continues to peak). This in turn excites the Earth's magnetic field, which in turn triggers increasing levels of seis- mic and volcanic activity, which in turn causes the real climate change. I also suggest that underwater vulcanism is a much more significant contributor to changes in ocean temperatures and currents than is generally recognised. It seems that the greenhouse/global warming scenario has been hijacked by (mostly European-based) transnationals who are intent on using the Kyoto Protocol to subjugate the industries of other nations while their own flourish. It would be better if such treaties could enforce measures now against the toxic chemicals that are killing life on this planet, rather than allow nations to continue to engage in economic bullying over still-disputed climate change theories. There has certainly been intentional misrepresentation of the actual scientific data regarding climate change, prior to its circulation to policymakers, the media and environment groups. In this issue, we present a critique of the false statistics issued by the UN IPCC's scien- tific advisers. We also intend to keep examining "man-made" versus "natural variation" theo- ries in future editions. T also recommend that you read the article on corporations and popular protest. Corporations are a relatively new phenomenon historically, but already their internal economies eclipse the GDP of many a nation. They are all-powerful, and they answer to no one—except millions and millions of insignificant little consumers... Remember, we can make a difference!
