4 • NEXUS www.nexusmagazine.com APRIL – MAY 2002A North American "Bunyip"? Dear Duncan: "The Bunyip Mystery" by Gary Opit (NEXUS9/01) is interesting. I have neverseen a bunyip, but in the state ofMichigan, USA, I once sawsomething rather interesting. There is a very small, clear stream with an apparent sink-holeapproximately 130 miles north ofDetroit (down Vandyke Road) onthe outskirts of Brown City, onBrown City Road, just south ofClearlake Road. The stream runsbetween some sod fields andunder a small bridge over BrownCity Road. My older brother Allen and I decided to go fishing in thestream one day, on the east sideof the bridge, about 20 feet fromthe bridge. The water was deep.As soon as I let my line downinto the water, my, I got a bite! Ibegan reeling my catch up to thesurface; however, we had to cutmy line and run! Under the water appeared large black serpents (about 20 of them)that had large, human-sized,humanoid heads, and many long, sharp fangs. Their eyes are what disturbed us the most. They were humaneyes! We didn't wait long enoughto see how long they were, norhow hungry. Someone should capture one for the record. However, if they losetheir life trying, it's not my fault. R. C. van Horn, Ionia, Michigan, USA Benefits of Coconut Oil Dear Sir: The article in the last NEXUS on coconut oil remindedme of my own experiences with itwhen I was a young bodybuildershowing off on Bondi Beach inSydney. I cannot comment on its nutri- tional benefits because I neverconsumed any, but can share withreaders how it helped me inanother way. In order to look good during competitions, and to be noticedby admiring bikini girls, everybodybuilder needed to have agood tan. To speed up the tanning process and to protect my skin at the sametime, I tried various chemistlotions without success becausethey quickly washed off in the seaand did not enhance tanning. One day, my old gym instructor suggested I try using coconut oilon my body. "Pull the other one,"I replied. However, because itwas cheap to buy and I had noth-ing to lose, I had a go. Apart from a slight odour, the oil made my body gleam, did noteasily wash off in the surf, andgave me a terrific and quick tan. Before long, all the other body-builders were using it. I cannot of course predict how it might affect other people, but itcertainly helped me tan and itprotected my skin. I wonder ifit's being used in current suntanlotions or is still the best-keptsecret in the tanning game. Dr Eugene Ross, Queensland, Australia Underground Complexes Dear Duncan: I have just fin- ished reading the letter on secrettunnels in the latest issue ofNEXUS [9/02], and it remindedme of a similar story I've comeacross before. It was a radio "documentary" that was on the ABC about 10years ago, on the subject of theOlympic Dam uranium/gold/cop-per mine in South Australia. The reporter was describing the inside of the mine, and at onepoint he referred to "huge steeldoors, several feet thick" thatblocked off part of the mine thatdidn't seem to be involved withthe general mining activities. From memory, he wasn't allowedinto that part of the mine. While I don't pretend to be a mining engineer, it seems unusualto need doors that wouldn't lookout of place at NORAD'sCheyenne Mountain complex, inside a mine. So it is my theorythat there is something downthere that has nothing to do withmining. It could be coincidence, and I'm speculating here, but it isconvenient that the Olympic Dammine is either next to or inside theWoomera "Protected" Area, where a lot of secret projects arecarried out. And isn't it nice that they changed the name of the test areafrom Woomera Prohibited Areato Woomera Protected Area? That gives me a warm, fuzzy feel-ing, even though I still can't go inthere. John Ritchie, AustraliaMicrowave Health Hazards Dear Editor: I found your arti- cle, "The Hidden Hazards ofMicrowave Cooking", very inter-esting [see website and 2/25]. I work for a food company in the microwave department. Wehave very large ovens in which tocook bacon for restaurants andsome fast-food places. We havefive in a row. Sixteen of us havecancer (mine is rare); three havedied. We need help: someone totalk to; a professor at a college orsomething. The company, the NIOSH and the state are all sweeping it underthe rug. They say the levels weare exposed to are quite safe. Yetthey can't explain it. I'm interest-ed in finding out about long-term,low-dose exposure—because theones who got cancer were all inthe department more than fouryears; myself for nine years. When they check the levels, theywalk through the place with theirinstruments for about 15 minutes, then leave. We are in it 40 hoursa week, year after year. We don't know what to do. Don't know who to contact. Weare scared. The company is lay-ing off and jobs are getting rarerby the day. Pay is good and ben-efits are good. A lot of peoplewon't leave because the companyhas them convinced there is noth-ing to worry about. I can't leavebecause I won't find an insurancecompany that will pay for a pre-existing condition if the crapcomes back. I had chondrosarcoma. My doc- tor says its primary cause is expo-sure to radiation! I don't know.Just gettin' desperate for someanswers and help. Robert Shields, USA, dobi- tus7@dwave.net Aboriginal Genocides Hi, Duncan: Read the item on Canadian genocide this morning[NEXUS 9/02]. Great to see youare addressing the genocide issue. What happened in Canada (andmany other countries taken overby European invaders) is easilyrecognised as the same here inAustralia. You could be talkingabout what happened here, and allyou would have to do is to put thenames of Australian institutes andauthorities who served the samefunction as those in Canada. In Australia, as you know but are unable to report, the govern-ment is also still actively commit-ting genocide and you only needto read the UN charter to under-stand why this is a fact. Mass removal of children from families is also an act of geno-cide, and government has alwaysbeen aware that such acts, if sus-tained, lead to the destruction of arace. Many are sick of these evil crimes against innocent familiesbeing defined as "well meaning".It was deliberate, malicious andcriminal at the time, and theyknew that. This is planned waron Aborigines—no less than whatHitler did to the races he pursued. Records in Victoria [Australia] reveal government-sponsored"sport shoots" in which thou-sands of Victorian Aborigineswere shot. It is not just coinci-dence that in many districts wehave no original tribe membersleft. That is because they wereshot, deliberately diseased, poi-soned, kidnapped, interned, degraded, removed, childrentaken as sex slaves and abused todeath, etc. Tell me what can be"well meaning" in that? As in Germany, where it is a serious crime to deny thegenocide of the Jews, so it shouldbe a crime in Australia to denythe genocide of the indigenouspeople. Adriaan Reivers, Truecrest Media [Good points, Adriaan. I was raised in Tasmania, which, foroverseas readers who don't know,is the small island-state to thesouth of Victoria. Tasmania hadits own racially distinct popula-tion of Aborigines. Most of themwere shot, poisoned and killed, like animals. After decades ofthis genocide, the remaining fewwere put onto nearby islands, where they starved to death. Ed.] Action on GATS Dangers Dear Sir: The General Agreement on Trade in Serviceshas still received no coverage inthe popular media, nor parliamen-tary or open public debate of anykind. Nobody seems to knowabout it, but being a party toGATS, as Australia is, will resultin massive changes to our lives inAustralia.Letters to the Editor ...
