UFO Crashes 93 UFO or USO? LAP means “Unidentified Flying Object.” But what if the UFO isn’t flying in the air, and is, instead, underwater? In these cases, the objects are called USOs or “Unidentified Submarine Objects.” USOs have been reported in all of the Earth’s seven oceans and in many lakes and rivers. One very active area is off the coast of Southern California. Some UFO investigators believe that this might be the location of an underwater UFO base. What follows are four of the more than 50 en- counters that have been reported in this area. August 8, 1954 The crew of the Japanese steamship Aliki observe what they think is a fireball descending from the sky and plunging into the Pacific Ocean off the California coast. Moments later, the object reemerges from the ocean and then plunges back in. The crew notes the event in the ship’s logbook. January 15, 1956 Residents, security guards, lifeguards, and police officers observe a large, glowing object glide out of the sky and float about 75 yards offshore of Redondo Beach, California. After a few minutes the craft sinks beneath the waves and disappears. February 5, 1964 Eleven survivors are rescued by the Coast Guard from their raft after the sinking of their yacht, the Hattie D., off the California coast. The survivors claim that an unidentified submarine object rammed their boat, sinking it in a matter of minutes.
