On October 4, Laurie Wickens and four other people were driving through the small fishing village of Shag Harbor in Nova Scotia when they saw a cluster of very bright lights swoop down out of the sky and crash into the nearby harbor. They drove quickly to the impact site and saw a strange 60-foot-long unidentified object slowly begin to sink beneath the surface. At the same time, local resident Mary Banks saw what she thought was an airplane crash into the harbor. Both Banks and Wickens called the authorities. At the same time, dozens of other calls flooded into local radio stations and newspaper offices. Before long, a crowd of more than a dozen onlookers surrounded the beach area and watched the strange dark object several hundred yards offshore. At this point, the object sank beneath the surface, making the water bubble and froth. Several local fishermen offered their boats to search for the object.
