36 Figure 2.2 The Lubbock Lights. In August of 1951, the town of Lubbock, Texas experienced a wave of UFO activity. On August 31, resident Carl Hart Jr. snapped this famous photograph of a formation of objects as they passed over the town. The photograph has never been satisfactorily explained. (Bettmann/Corbis) 1951, resident and amateur photographer Carl Hart Jr. saw the objects. He grabbed his Kodak camera and quickly snapped two clear photo- graphs of the glowing UFOs, both of which showed the formation of unusual craft. Major Edward Ruppelt, the head of Project Blue Book, wrote of the case, “This was by far the best combination of UFO reports I’d ever read, and I’d read every one in the Air Force’s files.” Still there was little that could be done. By the end of August, the UFOs had stopped appearing and the weird wave of sightings came to a sudden end."!
