Proof of the UFO cover-up came in 1980, when the private UFO group, Citizens Against UFO Secrecy (CAUS) used the Freedom of Information Act to force the NSA to release any UFO documents it was holding. The United States District Court heard the case of CAUS vs. NSA. The court reviewed a 21-page Top Secret report about the alleged documents because the NSA felt that the documents UFO documents. However, the court ruled in favor of the NSA. They refused to release the documents saying that such an action “could seriously jeopardize the work of the agency and the security of the United States.” The court concluded that, “Public interest in disclo- sure is far out-weighed by the sensitive nature of the materials and the obvious effect on national security their release would entail.”*! On July 28, 1968, the first Congressional hearings were held on the subject of UFOs. Distinguished scientists from across the country were asked to testify before the House Committee on Science and Astronautics. Nearly all the scientists recommended further investiga- tion into the phenomenon. Panel member Dr. J. Allen Hynek said, “As far as UFOs are con- cerned, I believe we should investigate them for the simple reason that we want to know what lies behind this utterly baffling phenomenon.” Famous astronomer Carl Sagan agreed, and said, “If we are being visited by representatives of extraterrestrial life, just to stick our heads in the sand would be a very bad policy, I think.” Dr. Robert Hall testified, “There is strong evidence that there is some physical phenomena underlying a portion of the reports.” While the overall conclusion of the Congressional hearings was positive, it had little effect. Today, the government officially does not investigate UFO reports. However, many civilian UFO researchers UFOS AND ALIENS themselves were too sensitive to release even to the courts.
