They were also called Essenes. The Pythagorean Greeks affiliated themselves with this movement, as also did the Levitical Hebrews; and all followed Pythagoras as their leader. Thus, when Apollonius of Tyana appeared among them, fresh from his studies in the Himalayas under his Buddhist master, teaching doctrines that were a synthesis of Buddhist and Pythagorean teachings, he was enthusiastically received by the Essenes and hailed as the long-awaited Teacher of Righteousness and their an leader.
