CHAPTER The proof or the inferno of error BEFORE ADDRESSING THE MATTER OF PROOF, I should define the context in which it should be discussed. The basic problem of paranormal phenomena such as UFOs, but even more of science in general, lies in the “jungle” we call our mind: we want proof! Many wish wholeheartedly to prove the existence of paranormal phe- nomena, including UFOs, but we still need the right instruments to establish this proof. We use equations. However, do equations describe reality? According to the Chambers dictionary, proof is “something which proves or establishes the truth of anything.” The editorial of a once-only edition” dedicated to scientific proof paints an a objective picture: “For a long time, we used to see scientific proof as the paragon of the way in which truth was established. Today this picture seems sin- gularly eroded....Has scientific proof lost its merits? This issue proves it has not...provided we strip this expression of its outdated content! [I will address the concept of the signified later]. “Whether they are part of the action or science historians, our authors hardly seem to focus their concerns on the research of truth or falsity....Once the power of intimidation of scientific proof elimi- nated and the diversity and vulnerability restored, will it regain the te a general favor?” This shows the relativity of the quasi sanction of proof that becomes “officially” vulnerable. A scientific result may exist only because we expected it, since the biases of the formulation made the theory ad hoc. Postulates are sometimes proven with the same postulates. That is the aoe tat Coe ad 87 definition of a tautology. :
