CHAPTER Experiments that raise questions OF COURSE, THE HISTORY OF UFOLOGY does not begin in 1947. However, on 24 July of that particular year Kenneth Arnold saw nine objects in the sky near Mount Rainier in the state of Washington. This event marked a significant turning point in global history. It stood out for two reasons. First of all, the observer was par- ticularly unique. Kenneth Arnold was a businessman as well as a pilot. While flying his airplane he saw boomerang-shaped objects that would later be known as flying saucers.’ The second reason was generated by the media. Indeed, the development of press, radio and television underwent enormous growth and the event seemed sufficiently dra- matic to be publicized.
