“Official” science is therefore on a self-imposed mission to cut back the branches. However, what do we know of the fruits they could bear? We could envision positive things and tell ourselves that the harvest of sometimes antinomian proposals is the manifestation of a springlike vitality among scientists who eventually manage to reach agreement on the great unalterable principles. On the other hand, we could also see this effervescence as a sign of the neverending fight to impose our views, at the risk of changing the balance of research ethics via commit- tees of mediating referees. Are we in an assembly of wise men or in an arena of gladiators fighting for their lives? It would be nice if those who favor a psycho-sociological explanation of ufology made a psy- chological study of the members of these committees on which they actually rely to refute the existence of serious ufology research. How- ever, perhaps they would then become both judge and jury. Perhaps they would use research instruments that are actually avoided by absolute relativity. Wise men or gladiators? Probably both at the same time, depending on the height that each is willing to take. However, which place is occu- pied by the truth in all this? Just like the truth is not meant to be spo- ken all the time, every truth is not meant to be found. How many research proposals have been rejected simply because the theme they broached was not in line with the dogmatic framework of prevailing theories? Is the love of truth the birthright of our society, considering how it is used by voters on election day and, most of all, by the media when it comes to information? Most citizens wrongly think that the truth (signified) prevails. Many are not interested in knowing the truth, but in the opinion of others. The truth often frightens us when it opposes the beliefs that validate our choices. We use the signifier (the word truth) to “mold” the signified instead of expressing it. The progress made by science should not be measured in terms of pub- lished articles, but of rejected articles, because those are the mark of a true researcher. Finally, it is rare to find genuine researchers of the truth who really see beyond appearances and are fully dedicated to that cause. The lack of time, the solicitations and the pressure of all kinds ne ee a Can we still add other proposals to this ambivalent and vaguely outlined universe of knowledge consisting of shrewd manipulations? Of course. It is even a necessity; a vital one at that! Can new proposals still be part of the framework of modern physics? A new theory should obligatorily get off the beaten path, 94 The Science of Extraterrestrials: UFOs Explained at Last ° Eric Julien prevail too often over our enthusiasm. nA wa aa ad 1
