5. Proof is negotiated by those who take part in the personal assim- ilation of the experience. History is constantly rewritten. Science historians therefore argue: “Thinking that proof is absolute, a permanent given, would be historically false. Is there any statement that was not refuted one day?” This shows us the frailty of “scientific proof” that only has status in a specific context, that of temporarily accepted laws. Let us start using our calculators for purposes that go well beyond “‘advanced physics,” which may only be a few years old but will be considered prehistoric in the coming decades. It may be useful to add that the views of science historians are not shared by scientists who cannot be judge and jury at the same time. The assimilation of what we read or hear therefore takes place prior to the establishment of proof. The vast majority of skeptics do not follow that approach. They merely retain their status of believers. Better even, negotiating the proof requires at least two individuals. The irra- tional does not come from the one we believe, but from the one who shows off the arguments of the proof he failed to understand, as we have just seen. Unfortunately, ufology fans and skeptics often stick to their positions. We often witness dialogues between the deaf. It is what others do with the proof provided that counts in the acknowl- edgment of the supernatural. However, can contempt be considered proof? Proof of what? moon 1 ww : ato a ae Finally, we have seen that genuine certainty, another word for the designation of proof, comes only from experience. When it comes to paranormal phenomena, is there another approach than by experience in order to obtain the authority required to debate it? In other terms, if the witness is able to search for explanations, does not that make him the highest authority to speak about the experience? Do not the five points mentioned above defined by historians to establish the founda- tions of proof in fact describe consciousness? 92 The Science of Extraterrestrials: UFOs Explained at Last ° Eric Julien
