time warp? We became a trio, mutually aware that something was going to grow from our relationship. So many nights after college we would continue our discussions in local pubs and in each other’s houses. I became a member of their nationwide UFO organisation and attended many conferences across the country. People were starting to think of us as related at college as we had become a type of clique threesome always engaged in something. That oddity went no further than pure mutual interests. Fate perhaps brought us together and the threesome would inevitably form a legitimate study group. What we were becoming concerned with was the lack of depth investigating UFO’s and why nothing seemed to be followed up. So many stories would be written about sightings and sometimes encounters but what ever happened to the people afterwards? Did they all simply re-emerge into the lives of Mr & Mrs Average? It seemed that the areas we studied were what people really wanted insight to. Everyone read about sightings, made opinions about photographs seen and stories of leaked government documents but what people ultimately wanted to know was “who is actually piloting these things and why are they here?” This appeared to be the gap that we as a small group wanted to fill. It was mid 1995 and this was a very stimulating period for paranormal subjects. The controversial footage of the Roswell alien autopsy was shown to the public for the first time and that opened a large can of worms. There were also a whole range of UFO and paranormal magazines around at the time, I would estimate about 8 different titles appearing in newsagents. Only one of those magazines is still in circulation. Naturally this was a good time to take advantage of this public interest and advertise our own proposed study group in one of those magazines. We as a threesome knew what our objectives would be from the extensive conversations we had and what we needed was a name to spearhead those objectives. This was a tricky point to agree on as the name had to conjure up what we were all about and what would set us aside from the other research groups listed. In a nutshell, we wanted to be the study that dealt with “closer encounters” so Paul decided this should inevitably be the name. I was uncomfortable with Closer Encounters, likening it to a name given to contact services for explicit affairs rather than a serious study group. My idea for a fitting name would be CES as we would be specialising in the next progressive step from the phenomena of CE4--the level of contact involving abduction. CES (close encounter of the 5th kind) would explain our research 53
