Around the age of 11 I remember writing an unusual essay when asked to write a piece for homework about how the future might be. I came up with an idea about a worldwide network that defended the earth from invasion (this was before I knew about President Reagan’s Star Wars project). Not only did this network defend the earth but it could locate all living entities within the planet by picking up on their psyche to monitor their well-being and safety. Basically it was a worldwide x-ray able to penetrate through any matter in order to home in on anyone’s energy field anywhere. At that age I idn’t necessarily use terms like “psyche” or know much about people’s energy fields but I described what I had in mind aptly for a boy of 10. I remember calling this network the God Ray as it was like a computerised mind that protected all its people with the presence to observe all, much like the idea of God. Today I would have translated this story more scientifically, but at the time my only references were religious or magical. Like so many of my ideas, the essay wasn’t even brought up by the teachers as they were becoming wise to my odd theories. I hadn’t thought about that essay or the “God Ray” in years, but recently a memory cropped up that put it back under the magnifying glass. Something happened during my term spent at the strange school that made me realise where this God Ray originated. I seem to remember being taken by one of the hooded teachers to view something, something I wasn’t to remember. I saw an image of the Earth from space, something I had seen on numerous occasions but completely forgotten about. On this occasion the whole planet was enveloped in something like a slight transparent field consistent over both hemispheres. Once again I had the dual vision where I could see the Earth with or without the field depending on which view I chose. The option to see it with the field was a deliberate move by the teacher to allow me to see its sheer vastness. I could even hear voices or thoughts of the planet’s inhabitants, sounding like an orchestra, all expressing their collective joy and gratitude that this protection existed. I suspect the image and voices were induced rather than my witnessing anything real because I know how these alien masters of illusion can beguile. Whatever the scenario was, it left an immediate impression in me about the human need for a god of some kind to overlook and account for each of its billions. This, however, was not a god but a high-tech contraption that seemed to convey another message about the importance of sophistication and how it should benevolently serve mankind. leven had the impression that the field didn’t just home in on living psyche but also had a purpose for picking up spiritual energies, perhaps even for an 102
