MESSERSCHMITT Me 264 AMERIKAB BER The t mber oe) Ho 229 SPIRIT OF THURINGIA The Horten All Wing Jet Fighter A group of German authors, some of whom were involved at the time, have brought together a history and overview of the establishment and activities of government flight-test centres in Germany from resumption in the 1920s until the end of the Second World War. Major locations included are the research facilities at Johannisthal, Lipetsk, Rechlin, Travemiinde, Tarnewitz and Peenemiinde-West. In 1939, the RLM asked manufacturers for proposals for an ultra-long-range, four-engined aircraft capable of attacking the USA from airfields in Germany. Messerschmitt's influence was such that he was given an immediate order for three aircraft. Other types featured include the Ta 400, Fw 238, Ju 390 and the jet-powered Ho XVIII B flying wing as well as the truth behind the rumours associated with Germany's atomic bomb carrier. The Ho 229 was one of the most enigmatic aircraft designs to emerge from World War Two. In some ways a precursor of the ‘stealth’ concept, it was Clearly years ahead of its time. Its development and operational record is charted in detail. One of the prototypes, V3, survives in the USA and the book includes specially commissioned photographs of it, together with twenty pages of highly detailed scale drawings produced by Arthur Bentley.
