Allen Hynek asked me to accompany him on a visit to Los Angeles, where independent film producers Alan Sandler and Robert Emenegger were shooting a new documentary. The idea was to capitalize on the public's fascina- tion with UFOs to show that the Air Force was open and excited about the possibility of meeting space aliens, although it reserved judgment on their existence. Other documentaries in the series, which were supposed to focus on Air Force medical research and on space science breakthroughs, were planned but never made. Sandler Institutional Films had done similar public relations turnarounds for Bank of Amer- ica and Armand Hammer, and that background led to the selection of
