In all these instances, the mapmakers of the Age of Discov- ery stated that their sources were ancient maps from Phoeni- cia and "Chaldea," the Greek name for Mesopotamia. But as others who have studied these maps had concluded, no mortal seamen, even given some advanced instruments, could have mapped these continents and their inner features in those early days, and certainly not of an ice-free Antarctica.
