166 the result of some long-range planning, and so they may have given more thought to communication than we, who had suddenly become aware of their presence with little advance warning. Another possible means of communication that could have been arranged on short notice would be some visual signals, such as a large picture laid out on the ground showing a human offering a bouquet of flowers to our visitors. This assumes, of course, that our cultural behavior would mean about the same to them as it does to us, rather than the opposite or nothing at all. Do you see the problem? Those faced with the challenge of trying to "talk" to the aliens wouldn't have the slightest idea what they were doing! But we would have to try, or miss a historic opportunity. One clue could be found on the I beams recovered at Foster Ranch, to say nothing of what may have been found in the main part of that craft or the one that crashed at the Plains of San Agustin. Armed with what had to be considered alien writing (but could have been something else), we would have put our top linguists to work and could have learned something. At least enough to make our communication attempts a little more than shots in the dark. Whether any attempts to establish an exchange were made is, of course, secret, as are any results.
