cases, overt religious messages are given to abductees. These messages can include the notion that the aliens are our creators, that they are trying to advance our evolution through these breeding experiments, and that mankind must unify—with their assis- tance—into a system of global governance and religion in order to survive the future cataclysms. We will examine such messages in detail in subsequent chapters. In the last several years, researchers have tried to determine who is "at risk" for an abduction event. While there is not a clear-cut profile of who is and who is not likely to be abducted, some patterns have emerged which suggest an increased risk. According to John Mack and others, abduction can occur at almost any age. Many abductees claim that their encounters began at the age of two or three and continued until adulthood. In addition, abductees are most likely to have seen a UFO on numerous occasions prior to the abduction event. Differences in gender, socioeconomic status, and race do not seem to correlate to an increased incidence of abduction. However, C.D.B. n ted 1m n ean owe od ‘ wou ‘ c Bryan, in his book Close Encounters of the Fourth Kind, notes that "contactees were for the most part unchurched people."' Bill Alnor, author of UFOs and the New Age, and David Allen Lewis, author of UFO: End Time Delusion, agree with this conclusion. It has been called to our attention that there appear to be exceptions in which ostensible Christians have been abducted, such as in the Andreason Affair. However, it also appears that in these cases an invitation was accepted by the abductee. It is the author's belief that Christians cannot be abducted against their will. (See Checklist for Potential Contactees, anAYN page 339.) Abductee surveys have revealed that the overwhelming majority of abductees have shown an interest in paranormal activities, Eastern religions, and New Age world-view. A large percentage of abductees have also reported a history of involvement with Ouija boards, astrology, witchcraft, astral projection, telepathic communication, channeling, past life regressions, and the like. Still others simply agreed to go along with their abductors when approached. "I have the impression that abductees as a group are usually open and intuitive individuals, less tolerant than usual of societal authoritarianism, and more flexible in accepting diversity and the unusual experiences of other people. Some of my cases report a variety of psychic experiences, which has been noted by other researchers."!”* associated with individuals who grow up in a severely dysfunctional, abusive home, especially if there is a history of sexual abuse as a child. In general, abductees are not physically harmed by these encounters. However, John Mack and others have documented severe psychological and emotional disturbances 67 events on Earth and the destruction of Earth due to environmental degradation. In some ABDUCTEE PROFILE Regarding the profile of abductees Mack reports, Mack also notes that abductions tend to run in families. An increased risk seems to be PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECTS
