field of ufology. In the files of Vallee and Hynek are some of the best-documented cases of UFOs which defy conventional physical explanations. On July 1, 1965, in the city of Valensole, France, a farmer named Maurice Masse heard an unusual noise when he arrived in his field at 6:00 A.M. When he walked toward the noise, he saw a machine that had landed in his field. His initial impression was that it was some sort of prototype or experimental aircraft. However, when he approached the machine, at a distance of approximately 20 feet, he saw an egg-shaped craft no bigger than a car. In front were two pilots dressed in gray-greenish suits. They were humanoid in form, with very large heads, about four feet tall, and having only a very small slit with no lips for a mouth. They wore no helmets and seemed to breathe our air without difficulty. When the "pilots" saw Masse, they took a small tube from its container and pointed it at him. He immediately found him-self on the ground unable to move. A few moments later the creatures went into their craft. The craft rose above the ground and accelerated away rapidly. When the ship was about 60 yards away, Masse stated, it vanished. Questioned closely by investigators on this point, Masse made it quite clear. The craft did not streak away: "One moment, the thing was there, and the next moment, it was not there anymore." Masse remained alone in his field, paralyzed for about 20 minutes. For several weeks his relatives and friends reported that he was extremely drowsy, finding it very difficult to stay awake for over four hours. The significance of this story is that it is representative of hundreds of cases in the files of experienced UFO investigators. Masse was not an eccentric. He was a well-respected pillar of his community and a former resistance fighter in the war. And yet, he encountered something that can only be described as impossible. Encounters such as these are usually single-witness cases and draw considerable skepticism by authorities and the general public. However, similar cases have been witnessed by numerous unrelated witnesses. CASE 2: JALAPA, MEXICO In the sleepy town of Jalapa, Mexico, early in the month of September 1965, numerous witnesses saw a luminous, hovering oval object with slits along its entire circumference. Near the craft they saw an unusual "black clad being," holding a shining metal rod, with eyes that gleamed like a cat's eyes. While under observation by a local reporter, two taxi drivers, and a bullfighter, the craft suddenly vanished.” As discussed in the first chapter, since the Mexico UFO wave started in 1991 a number of UFOs have been observed to instantaneously materialize and dematerialize. According to Brit Elders, researchers in Mexico have utilized sophisticated equipment to analyze more than a thousand videotapes of UFOs seen over Mexico since July, 1991. On numerous occasions they have documented that UFOs have materialized and demateri- i 4 Aan c cota ' 47 CASE 1 : THE VALENSOLE FARMER" alized in one-30th of a second, or one frame of videotape! "...
