impossible for any man-made object at that time, objects which vanished instantaneously while under close observation. In a fascinating postscript to this story, Jacques Vallee points out that "when the abnormal [radar] returns showed up on the screens an officer ordered two men to go out and with a cam-era to take pictures of the source. They soon came back, thephotos were developed on the spot and they were immediately confiscated. All men in the room were told to remain silent and never to mention the photographs, which showed perfectly clear luminous objects.”*” The physical effects of UFOs have been well-documented by government and civilian investigators. In many cases, alleged landing sites have revealed deep depressions and scorch marks on the ground. Plant material is often killed in direct proportion to the distance from the center of the landing site. Increased radioactivity at alleged landing 1 1 1 1 "... That UFOs occasionally land on the ground is lent credence by the indentations that have been found at possible land sites. A strange residue may be left on the ground, later to vanish. In rare instances, cows and smaller animals have been found at these places—mutilated or cut completely in two." During the time of an actual UFO encounter, a number of unusual physical phenomena have also been recorded. In a number of cases electronic appliances have been disrupted and gasoline engines shut down. Interference with radio and television reception and detection of pulsed electromagnetic discharges have also occurred. Surges of microwave and ultra-violet radiation have been recorded, and witnesses who have experienced close encounters have even been burned by intense ultraviolet radiation emitted by lights aboard a UFO. And, a curious aspect of the UFO phenomenon is that radar often detects UFOs on every other pulse. Among the thousands of cases of UFOs reported in the last 50 years, more than 700 of the cases have been reported by experienced airline and military pilots. The reliability of such witnesses and the physical evidence left at landing sites are powerful indicators to many investigators that the phenomena are real. One of the preeminent researchers of the UFO phenomenon was the late Dr. J. Allen Hynek, Chairman of the Northwestern University Department of Astronomy. Hynek was a skeptic regarding the existence of UFOs when he was commissioned by the U.S. Government to be the chief scientific advisor to Project Bluebook in 1952. During his time with this investigative body, Hynek examined thousands of cases of UFOs and alleged human contact with extraterrestrial beings. He amassed a library of such reports which has yet to be surpassed. In his 1972 book, The UFO Experience: A Scientific Inquiry, Dr. Hynek chronicled his experience in UFO research and the data that he had collected. Regarding his attitude towards UFOs he stated: 41 UFO REALITY sites has also been observed in numerous cases.' The effects of UFO landings are confirmed by Weldon and Levitt: "When I first got involved in this field I was particularly skeptical of people
