Even though they haven't landed on the White House lawn, we are truly in the midst of a cultural alien invasion. In the early 1950s a second wave of UFOs began to sweep across the United States. On May 11, 1950, Paul Trent, a farmer in McNinnville, Oregon, saw a spectacular metallic disk floating silently over his farmland. Trent grabbed his cam-era and took two grainy black-and-white photographs of the object described as a flying saucer. These were the first photographs ever taken of an object described as a "flying saucer." They were published in newspapers around the world. These pictures have been scrutinized in detail and have never been dismissed as fraudulent by Air Force officials. In the minds of many, the reality of UFOs had finally been established with this pair of In March 1950, Navy Commander R. McLaughlin published an article in True Magazine describing how scientists had tracked a silvery saucer-like object traveling at an overhead speed of 25,200 miles per hour near the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. This was a startling report because no physical object could travel at such speeds without burning up in the atmosphere. The most startling UFO event of the 1950s occurred over the air space of Washington, D.C., in 1952. On July 19 at 11:40 PM., seven UFOs were picked up on the long-range radar at the Air Route Traffic Control (ARTC) used for all air traffic around Washington D.C., as well as the short-range radar at the Washington National Airport. The encounter was fully documented by Edward J. Ruppelt, the director of Project Bluebook.” According to Ruppelt's account, the UFOs were only a few miles southeast of Andrews Air Force Base and were initially traveling at a speed of 100 to 130 miles per hour. The UFOs were examined on the radarscope by four controllers including the senior air traffic controller on duty that night. Shortly after detection, two of the objects streaked away at approximately 7,000 miles per hour! The senior controller immediately called the main control tower at the Washington National Airport as well as controllers at Andrews Air Force Base. Air traffic controllers at both sites confirmed not only the existence of the TIAA.
