Intelligence Officer
Castlo Air Force Base
Merced,California
Dear Sir:
I wish to report the porformance of an odd aorial objiet sighted by a
friond and me fron the yard of his homo at approximately1830, 20 Angust
noar the northern outskirts of Fresno, Calif.
While talking to this friend in his yard, we were attraoted by a loud
jet-like sound, and looking up toward the South, we saw an unrecognizable
aireraft ap roaching at apparently high spoed . It was traveling rortherly;
but we could not ascertain its altitude, because we could not decide on its
dimensions. The machino approached in speedy, jerky movement to a position
whioh seemed about 30 degree angle from where we stood.
It paused momentarily, and moved erratically sideways to its left; then It paused momentarily, and moved erratically sideways to its left; then
forward, and then sideways to its right, and finally backmrd at high rate
of speed until it was out of sight in the southern hase. It did not aotually of spoed until it was out of sight in the southern hase. It did not aotually
turn on its axis.
The complote maneuver can best be deseribed as a square course at con-
stant elevation; but its manner seemed much too fast for any ordinary produet-
ion 'copter, and far too erratic for any production conventional fixed wing
jet aircraft we've ever seen or read about. The craft seemed to pause logically
at the corners of the square. It was emitting a very loud JEt TYrE noise.
Wo could discern none of the 'whipping' sound of conventional 'coptor rotors, Wo could discern none of the 'whipping' sound of conventional 'copter rotors,
probably bocause of altitude; nor could we actually see rotors moving in their
aros. Wo thought we could see a sort of fusolage and pair pf rotors tilted in
opposite directions. This view was not a good underside view; but sort of
profile. The object was not near enough to reveal any outstanding features
or configurations such as control surfaces, lending gear, or compartments.
One point is clesr. The machine seemed to have executed the whole maneuver
without changing longitudinal or direetional position of its fuselage. The
craft was also seen by neighbors who were as perplexed as we were. We think
the object was of browmish color. Color was hard to ascertain.
A little about my background: I've read some of the material on the
so-called 'flying saucers, and dises'; but have not been 'trying to see' these
unusual sky objeets. I hold a valid airman's certificate (No. 677121) with
some l50 hours of flying in light lanes over a several years period. I've
seen nothing like the aforemontioned object. rerhaps, rany pcople ARE seeing
atmospheric phenomena. Some MusT be seeing definite physical objects in the
sky other than distorted viows of woather belloons, high-flying airerft, ete.
Frankly, we are stumped on what WE sew. We do agree that in all likelihood,
we saw an earth-made machine; besausn des,ite its fast speed and sudden move-
ments, it didn't seem entirely unreal, or too illogical, or unfeasiblo.
In summary, we were fascinated by the loud jet-like roar of an unusual
airoraft; and being not wnfamiliar with fundamental aerodynamic principles
associated with both 'co ters, and fixed-wing craft, wo could not understand
FRAME 010 / 023paddle-gpu-200dpi
how a 'copter type could be propelled et agparently HIGi SphED by jet power.
The jet sound was the big thing that attracted us, and several neighbors to
see this machine approaching our locality. (The Fresno Bee, nows aper carried
at loast 2 accounts of porsons seeing odd aerial objects above Fresno during
the same week).
Our report was not made to the newspapers, for the reasen wo did not
want the publioity involved.
We thought this information might be of interest to the proper euth-
orities. We have no design on publicity whatsoever, and wish to remain
unquoted. If this machine we saw is some advanced type of Americen air-
craft--fine! If it is of foreign or unkmown origin, the U. S. Air Force
should be informed, we believe.
Sincerely
/s/

STATEMENT
On Wednesday, 20 August 1952, at approximately 9:00 P.M., I took my
dogs in the backyard of my home, San Antonio, Texas,
for their exercise. I was carrying one of the dogs in my arms and I
stooped toplace her on the ground. As I raised up, I was attracted by a
peculiar object in the North sky. This object seemed to be suspended in
space.
The cbject was circular in shape, illuminated with bright yellow
lights. Thess lights seemed to glitter or pulsate but not going entirely
off at anytime. The lights appeared to revolve around inside the object.
The center appeared blank or at least was a dark spot. The object appeared
quite large, about the same size as a bicycle wheel. The cbject was sway-
ing to and fro, in a pendulum-like fashion, covering an area of what
appeared to be approximately ten or fifteen feet, possible more.
I observed this object for approximately five minutes or more, then
suddenly it shot out in somewhat of an upward slanting course at a very
high rate of speed. I could not tell if the lights were still revolving
at this time, It traveled in a Northwesterly direction, and soon faded out
of sight. I did not hear any sound nor did I see any trail or exhaust.
It was not difficult to differentiate between this object and any type
of conventional aireraft, for it did not resemble such, nor operate in the
manner of any plane I have ever seen.
I certify that the statement above is true and correst to the best of
myknowladge:
