Dear M
The report of an unidentified flying object you submitted
on 6.October 1958 has been evaluated and the official opinicn
of the Air Technical Intelligence Center is that it was a meteor.
The I horn shape was probably created by the spark trail in the
immediate vicinity of the meteor head. The fact that the width
was reported as being greater than the apparent length can be
explained as an irregular shape, tumbling and being oriented such
that its longest dimension was at right angles to its path at the
time of sighting. The angular velocity of 10 degrees per second
reported in conjunction with the other reported information rules
out all but a meteor or satellite. Satellite data excluded this
as a possibility.
Thank you for your interest in this matter.
