of the area indicates that the road goes primarily NW. The observer stated in
her description that the object was crescent shaped. There was a crescent moon
relatively low in the western sky. The broken cloud cover and fog may have
confused the observer into thinking that it was something near rather than far

chasing her, and then when she stopped, hovering over her. The fog in the area

point that the observer began to feel hot. However, the observer stated that she
had the heater on and going full. This would account for the sensatio of heat,
particularly on the feet. F
The observer was quite upset during the sighting and states in her testimony
that "...I started crying a little bit..." It seems quite possible that in her
excitement and fear she may have stalled or turned off the ignition of her car,
thus accounting for the engine stopping.
The use of I
There is some evidence from her testimony that sh was interested in the subject

I cannot agree that all pertinent data has been gathered. For example,
the comments of the preparing officer stated that "the moon was in its
quarter phase that night and moonrise was approximately 20oo hours local
time" approximately. noo and moonset was
the north northeast at initial elevation of a approximately 15 degrees.
Moonrise is thus no possible explanation for this sighting.
Evaluation of this sighting depends largely, as I see it, on the reliability
of the witness. I Either she and her son were overexcited to the point of
hallucination (but for what reason?), or something similar to that reported
in many other cases happened. I feel it would be eminently worthwhile to
obtain Mrs. Lietha's testimony on tape by telephone, and to send you a
transeript, so that we can collectively make some judgement as to her
objectivity and reliability.
I fail understan have been so ill-

things that I couldn really give the report the attention it deserves
until now. However, I have read and re-read the report and have
or
slowed down. The fact that she slowed down because she was afraid
she might run into it is perhaps just her own illusion. She does not
is.
It is perfectly clear that she did not know what direction
she was traveling in. She said northeast, but the map clearly indicates

above her. I think she was so frightened that she killed her own
engine and turned out the lights. Naturally the radio went off as she
turned off the engine. Clearly she was pretty scared and her fright
altitude of 15 degrees is not inconsistent with the elevation of the moon,

I talked with Mrs. by telephone on 13 May 19 963." She repeated
practically every detail exactly as written in her letter. She is a former
member of the Air Force and is now a teacher of the elementary grades. She
seered to be a rational person, an observation supported by
a Buffalo County traffie officer. He was called by 'rs. approxi-
mately 203o hours ( 3 April.
I telephoned him on 15 May and his account of Mrs. s sighting
was essentially the same. She told him she first thought the object was an
airplane and then a helicooter because it was stationary. At first he thought
nothing of the report, but about an hour Iater he drove to her house to talk
personally with her. Her story was still the same.
a mile from the river, there ear the sighting position.
I have two possible explanations: That Mrs. Lietha saw a re-
flection of the moon onto the base of the fog layer from either the Mississippi
Piver or the Swamo and (2) that she saw the moon dimly visible through
the fog layer.
Her report that here seemed to be a haze around the object such as
smoke, fog, or angel hair would tie in. The moon was in its guarter phase that
would be sufficient for a reflection of the moon onto the base of the fog
layer in the form of a boomerang, which was the shape of the object described
by Yrs. Liethe.

I do not have an explanation for why the automobile engine
stopped and why the lights went out. She insists the ignition key
was on all the time. The make is a lo66 Pontiac. Perhaps moisture
from the road or in the air shorted the ignition system. There also
is the question of why the person in front of "rs. did not
report the same occurrence since, according to her report, the same
thing must have happened to him.
