NARRATIVE REPORT AND ASSESSMENT
UFO, 3 AUGUST 1965, SANTA ANA, CALIFORNIA
l. The following is based upon investigation conducted personally by
the Investigating Officer and from comments obtained from U.S. Marine
Corps investigators and various press representatives, and ineludes a
and the interplay of activities involving news media, the Marine Corps,
the Air Force, and other unconfirmed egencies and officials.
2. At approximately 1l30 hours PDT on 3 August 1965, Mr
was driving SSw on Myford Roed to check out a matter (not identified)
pertaining to his job for the Orange County Road Department. After
checking the item he turned his vehicle (Ford "van bus") around and
began to head NNE, still on Myford Road. He was still traveling at
only a few MPh (three to ten) when he first observed something out of
the corner of his eye, out of the left side window of the vehicle. At
object, Mr quickly stopped the vehicle and grabbed the Polaroid
camere which was on the front seat (sop for traffic investigators), and
took one picture of the object through the windshield. (NoTE: Marine
Corps investigators determined that the object vas at a bearing of loo
megnetie at the time the photograph was taken.) The UFo continued on
an ESE course at slow soeed. Mr was_able to take two additional
photographs of the UFo through the "dór window of his vehicle.
(NotE: Marine Corps investigators estimate that the bearing of the UFo
in picture nr 2 was about 900 magnetic, and that the bearing of the UFO
in pieture nr 3 vas about 700 magnetic.) This would indicate that
3._M comment to the Investigating Officer varied somewhat
from those given to the Marine Corps investigator. Hovever, it is
believed that the undersigned conducted a more thorough investigation
and that Mr couments which are noted below are essentially corments which are noted below are essentially
correct. Mr stated that he had attempted to use his two-way stated that he had attempted to use his two-way

encugh road clearance for the vehicle to pass him. Notihg that he was
on the shoulder of the road, he immediately turned again to look at the
UFo but found that it hed "disappeared into the haze".
5. The Investigating Officer has noted some skepticism on the part of
several individuals as to whetber or not Mr could have observed
the Uro, stopped his vehicle and taken three photographs - all in a
15 to 25 second time period."A check was made with people who are 15 to 25 second time period." A check was made with people who are

this bit of the story. The friend called the LIFE Magazine office in

the friend mailed the pictures to the Los Angeles office and presum-

Mr states thet at no time did he verbally agree to the re-
lease of the photographs or sign a statement of release. He also stated
he wished it had never happened.
On 14 September 1965, the G-2 office at the El Toro Marine Corps
Air Station learned that the photographs existed and contacted Mr
Herlin on 18 September. See their report in Atch 3 to the basic
letter.
Mr stated that following the publication of the Uro reports
on 20 or 2l September, he received several telephone calls, including
apparent hoak calls and two bomb threats. He also received two addi-
tional calls: one from a man who identified himself as a representative
of Bceing and the other who identified himself as a representative of of Eceing and the other who identified himself as a representative of

he did not know how all of these people managed to get His telephone
number. Although Mr Is nane was mentioned in the press releases,
neither his address nor, telephone number was mentioned. A check with
the Orenge County Ret Department verified that Mr telephone
number is unlisted.
The Marine Corps G-2 investigator who had borrowed the original
prints or the photography from Mr returned them to him et noon
on 22 September. Both Frank Hall or the Santa Ana Register and Sergeant
Dolyak of the office confirmed that Mr had given them the 1
photographs without any hesitation, without attempting to verify their
stated positions by closely examining their credentials, nor did he
ask for any receipt for photographs.
According to Mr on the evening of 22 September a man in
civilian clothing visited his house, flashed an identification card,
and announced that he was an "investigator from the North Amnerican
Defense Command". Mx berense OmushIa said that he did not examine the man's Sald tdeieaL the man's

who were informed that they could contact him at his residence after

c. That in certain instances, appointments vould be made with
the callers with Mr at his residence during evening hours.
One such appointment was made by a man who called the Road Depart-

appointment was made for the evening of 24 September. During the
investigating officer's conversation with Mr it vas requested
that in the event that the Roeing official or the NorAd official
contacted Mr he should obtain their name, office address, and

that the "Eoeing man" did not show up.

that the discrepancies in ir statements were due to both of
the following reasons:
a. The Marine Corps investigation wos generally cursory While —
this investigating officer went into detailed questioning.
b. That Mr while trying to provide as much inforna-

considerable nunber of speclfie points which had been observed some
seven veeks' earlier.
It is considered probable that although Mr wes doing his
honest best to recall details, that he would heve had, some difficulty
in trying to separate "fact from memory" from generel discussions and

estinated that the UFo had a dianeter of ebout three feet. Instead
of being insulted or erguing or acting ; as though he hed been caught

a. That this was quite interesting since a man from North
American Autonetics Division in Anahiem (who hed gotten a copy of the

diameter;
b. That he was still convinced that the object was about 30
