Gentlemen:
T am writing this inquiry in hope that you will
le to throw some light ons sudject that is causing
e9% deal of concern to many in this area.
Several UFO sightings hsve besn reported in our
immediate sresa by local citizens. Althougo sucno sightings
are dgascribed somewhat differently they are similar.
They sre soucer shsped objects little lsrger than a car with
red, white, and green lights. It alwysas lesves paerticulsr
odor sod in one case they deelsred they felt radition. The
enclosed article is one of several thst have bdsen our local
paper,
On the morning of July 18th our neighbor found in
his front yard directly in front of their home s peculisr
pattern of what appears to be oll spray such 63 a auto would
leayv2 excert that it wes ina smell circle around fifteen fast
tn diameter with a smsll tail like pattern leading off one sides
of it, Furtherout sround the edge of this circle were several
mars, each fairly evanly spaced and approximately an inch and
es hsif in hapth ~ merks such as s very large camera tripod
would make. The ares is such that an auto, Llsewn mower or
such device would have left tracks dus to several light rains
over the pret few days. tt slso seems curlous that the rain
did not fade or wssh away the subdstance.

ISAP SAFOI PB (Mrs pee
The Smithsonian Institute has forwarded us a letter from Mr. G.
ce - aommgiimm 3. =... Gainesville, Georgia.
The Pollowing information is provided to assist you in answering :
Mr. QM letter. The sighting of 13 July, has not been |
revorted to the Air Force; however, a sighting from Spartanburg,
South Carolina, on 29 June was reported to Warner Robins Air Force
Base and was evaluated as attributable to ball lightning. The
Pacts of the newspaper account of this sighting were mich distorted.
The grass sample suomitted with the article and letter contained
nothing unusual from that expected of a normal grass sample.
The newspaper article of the Turnerville sighting is the first
knowledge that the sir Force has received. Ho official report
was made to the Air Force on these sightings; therefore, no
evaluation is being made at this time. |

_ - Deas Mr. qa
This is in reference to your recent letter
to the Smithsonian Insatitution on the subject of
_ g0me unusual phenomena which has occurred in your
area.
The July 18th sighting of an “oil spray” type
pattern on che grass was never orficially reported
to the Air Force. However, an analysis of the grass
samoles tnelosed with your letter indicates that
they contain nething unusual from that normally
Pound in grass. The signting from Spartanburg, South
Carolina son June 29th was evaluated as tall lightning.
The facts of she newspaper account of this sighting
were mucn distorted,
The newsvager article of tne Turnerville sightings
is the first knowladge that the Air Force has re-
celved of this resort. No official revoort was made
to the Air Force on these sightings, and therefore, no
evaluation is being made at this time.
Inclosed is a summary of information on the Air
Force project Por the investigation and evaluation of
Unidentified Flying Object reports. We think this
brochure will helo to exolain the UFO ohenomena and its
causes a little more fully.
Sincerely,
MASTON M, JACKS
