l. This office has received an unidentified flying object report
from Ansted, West Virginia. This
letter is forwarded to your office in order that you may make a
reply
2. Evaluation of the information submitted by indicates
that the object observed was a meteor. The duration of l - 2
seconds, the description of the object with a flaming tail and a
In his initial letter the duration had not been included and there
was a possibility that magnesium. flares used in night photo missions
may have been the cause. Since the duration indicates that the
object was not fr falling this could not have been the. case. The
reported vertical fall of this meteor is rare, however, this does
not rule out a firball observation. Contrasting meteor observations
with those of satellite decays; it should be noted that the duration
of a decay is much longer (up to 4 mimutes) the colors tend to be
reds and yellows, speeds are mch slower and disintegration or break-
ing up is quite common.
