Dear SQM and the cio SOUR,
The OFPice of she President has asked tne Air Porce
to. reply to your letter of recent date in which you
reverted seeing some unusual aerial onenomena in che
2
cy over Dallas on Yeoruary i56n.
A eneck of our records reveals tnat che Navai
Peserve unit at Grand Prairie vas flying practice fliznts
in your area on that evening. They have no record of any
tmusual occurrence, so the fact that you watened them
take off just as you observed something unusual in she
sky must merely be coincidental. Their aircrait, Av-ig3,
which is the Navy version of the Air Porce ¥-36, are
oainted with fluorescent red and wnite paint s0 that you
may have observed others of their flight during a pertod
when the last rays of the sun caught the color red and
made it seem like "red objects" to you.
Many times, arter the sun has set and it is dark,
oojects very high in the sky still continue to catch the
3un's rays and give an unusual appearance to persons on
the sround. S3alloons can give this apvearance, even hizgh-
Plying-birds with a sreat deal of white on their under-
sides.
We are attacning three brochures, one Yor each or
you, on the Air Force program on Unusual Aerial Phenomena.
This brochure will give you additional information on
sightings or Unidentified Flying Objects and explain how
the Alr Force investizates and evaluates these reports.
Thank you ror reporting this observation. We hose
‘t3 explanation will be of interest to you.
