I. PURPOSE
To determine the composition of the sample submitted for aralysis
and its origin if possible.

II. FACTUAL DATA
1. The sample submitted for analysis was assigned Materials Physies
serial number 9237.
2. Microscopic examination showed the presence of finely divided
metal-like ticles.
3. Analysis of different pertions of the sample by emission spectroscopic
L methods showed the presence of the following elementsi
a. Principal aluminum
5. Minors. magnesium, caleium, silicon.
c. Traces manganese, lead, copper, and titanium.
4 4 Analysis by X-ray-methods showed the presence of Al03· 3H20. This
material has a bayerite crystalline structure.
5. 5, Analysis by mass spectrometric methods using a double focus Mattauoh-
Herzog mass spectrometer showed that the metal-like particles were Herzog mass spec trometer showed that the metal-like particles were
high purity alumimm.
6. Analysis of different portions of the sample by infrared spectro-
photometric methods showed that the organic material was composed
of polyisobutyl methacrylate.. of nolvisobutyl methacrylate

did not show the presence of rates or perchlorates in the sample.
3. Chemical analysis of two samples, a mineral-like material and an
organie material found in the vicinity showed them to be:
a. Slag. This material is commonly found around iron foundries.

III. CCNCLUSIONS
1. The sample is non-homogeneous.

resin paint, or
b. Sell the one batch of paint at cost as a "closing out of stock"
sale.
4. The Al02·3H0, bayerite structure, formed in place. Bayerite does
not occur in nature but results from the reaction of water. with
finely divided aluminum of high purity at low temperature, about
40°0. ("Aluminum Properties," ALCOA Research I AD No. 250599.)
5. Analysis of different organic portions showed the presence of
polyisobutyl methacrylate throughout.
6. The possible origin cannot be determined from these chemical data.
