Dear Mr. gaia

The report of an unidentified flying object you gave to
the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory was referred by that
agency to the Air Force Aerospace Technical Intelligence Center

for analysis and/or valuation.

%

It is the conclusion of the Aero-Space Technical Intelligence

Center that you probobly observed a meteor. The absence of a
trail is no reason <= rule out a meteor, for some leave trails and
e@shers do not. It is also true that some of the trails which are

left are faint and cen only be seen with an optical sid. Further,
most meteor trails »re not very persistent and may not endure long

enough for detection.

It is improbadic that you saw the flame from a jet aircraft;
first because this “lame is predominately blue, and second, it
would not be very bright from the 90° vantage point enjoyed by you

in viewing this obJsct.
You also incluced a newspaper article concerning the objects

reported to be circling the earth with Echo, but in the opposite
direction. ATIC is of the opinion that these objects were probably

high flying jet aircraft.
Sincerely,

LAWRENCS J. TACKER

1. Mr @@eeieer resorted an UFO sighting to the Smithsonian
Astrophysical Observatory and was referred to ATIC by that agency.

2. MEMMBEP reported viewing an object at 2305, 29 August 1960, which
was bright orange in color and moving from the northwest to the south-
west. The witness viewed the object for an estimated 30 seccomis. Ths
object was further described as appearing like the head of a missile on
fire. The cbservation took place at West Roxbury, Massachusstis.

3. It is the ATIC conclusion that e@@M@M probably observed a meteor.
The absence of a trail is no reason to rule out a meteor, for some
leave trails and others do not. It is also true that some of the
trails which are left are faint and can only be seen with an optical
aid. Further, most mteor trials are not very persistent and may not

have endured long encugh for detection.

ye It is improbable that Mrg@M, saw the flame from a jet aircrafts
first because this flame is predominately blue, and second, it would
not be very bright from the 90° vantage point enjoyed by the witness
in his otservation af the cbject.

Se ‘rif, also included a newspaper article concerning the objects
reported to be circling the earth with Echo, tut in the opposite
direction. As has been reported to your office before, sTIC is of
the opinion that these cotjects are protably high flying jet aircraft.

5. Suggest you inform Mr Hoar of the ATIC conclusions. The addrees
of the witness is:
