estimated the position of unidentified object to be ESE of his position at a
rango of approximately two miles.
Several other workers with observer noted a multi-engine U.S. Air Force
aircraft circling the vicinity of sighting for about ten minutes after
original sighting.
The weather was clear and
October 1958. The observer stated that the object bright although
the weather was clear and sunny.
Mr. also reported that he and his wife had sighted the "missile
part" reported to be "tumbling" t through space in July l958 while driving his
automobile on a local highway. (This "missile" part" is thought to be USSR
Satellite reported to Satellite reporte re-entering earth's atmosphere.)

the sky east of Charleston, South Carolina, at approximately 28/1755 hrs
October 1958.

a squadron aircraft that was to land
on Runway 33, when they first observed what appeared t be a white ball of
fire, about the size of a dime, with orange tail, about the length of a
standard lead pencil held at arns length. The object was first sighted
on an azimuth of l25o and approximate angle of l5, descending and disappearing
on an approximate azimuth of lo5o and approximate angle of 0-15°. Object
when first seen appeared to burn out then reappeared on the same trajectory
briefly before disappearing completely. Total time of observation was l-3
seconds, no visual aids were used and no aircraft were observed in area at
time of sighting.
2. A/1G" , also of the Llilth FIS, reported substantially
the same information with the following variation: After first observing
the object disappear, he never witnessed the secondary appearance, and
although he never checked his watch at the tir the sighting, he believes
it was between l8Oo and l9ooz hours. Airman was in the ramp area of the
44lth FTS at the time of observation and approximately 550 feet NE of
Building S-706, location No visual aids were used
and total time of sighting was 2-5 seconds.
3. Mr. approximate age 30, North
Charleston, S. C., ,who is employed as a teamster with the Overnite Trans-
portation Company, Charleston Heights, S. C., reported while he was driving
on a small rural road, acproximately five miles NW of Harleyville, S. C., on a small rural road, acproximately five miles NW of Harleyville, S. C.,

road he could not state definitely what direction he was heading in but felt
reasonably sure it was to the east. Subject described object as having reasonably sure it was east. Subject described object as having
the characteristics of a jet aircraft with approxinately half of the dark
colored fuselage engulfed in flames. He first observed the object to his

left, and could give no estimate of the distance involved. Mr. Quick also
stated that approximately two hours later he observed smoke rising from a

the opinion that it would have been in the vicinity of the crashed airplane.

men reported unusual sightings and no explanation could be given. The
44lth FIS was firing air-to-air rockets 30-50 miles east of Charleston Air
Force Base.
