"At aboutS:15)(May 17) stood on the little platform at the kead
of the oack stairs to acmire the starry heavens and behold, there care out of
the western sky,l ue west in the ecliptic (zodiac), southern part, a very bright,
silvery bluishoume Doody giving off sharp rays all aroundfmore brilliant than
Venus. And this was its aoparent course:

<ilometers directly west, so it cut off sight completely. Ine direction was jv-
NE. If it is true that such phenomena are within SO miles I thought many would
notice it. It seems to me a meteor zould not follow such a course. The whole
phenomenon was over in more or less a minute." Tre!
2. the following corments were made by Father rwarding the
above to this office:
a. The an-le reported by Father fits perfectly to the deyree
of description, the directions taken by the known itussian satellites.
Ls. It is reported that the Kussians are using a re-e try technique
which comes in horizontal and produces a skip. It seems that properly designed which comes in horizontal and produces a skip. It seems that properly designed 7
fins on a rocket would produce the pattern observed. There would be a slowing .
down as the vehicle rose in the atmosphere cue to the encounter with atmospheric down as the vehicle rose in the atmosphere due to the encounter with atnospheric
particles. It would then descend again.
c. That Father should be tne onc to observe or rather to be in
a position to observe another 'phenomenon' is quite reasonasle if these vehicles
are originating from the same place."
ColMinrs of Preparing Officer:
3. Father was interviewed by personnel of this ofrice on ls
Feoruary 1953 concerning the sighting reported in
man he aypeared active physically and mentally. His training and experience are
such as to make nim a qualified observer.
4. The A"p sent ground observation teams into the general area described in
IR-sO-53 out located no debris and learned no additional information concerning
the October l957 sighting.
