Comnanding Officer,

Mitchel Air Force Base, Lnidentified Object
Lonz Ialand, New York.

Dear Sirs

4

Last night at 2357 nours, I was atanding outside near my house at
above address. I was amazed tc see an airplane approaching from the east,
making no sound, and with the mtire wingspan looking as if continuous
tiny yellow flames were flickering along it. The tail light was somewhat
orighter than most tail lizghta, and burned continuously rather than flash-
ing. 8ased upon a comparison with 4-snzine airliners, the aircraft seemed
to be about the same size, and cruising at maybe 250 MPK grcand speed at
an altitude of 5,000 fest of thereabouts.

several miles behind this airplane a conventional airplane followed,
that I assumed was an airliner although it very likely was a military
airplane having some connoction with the mystery plane. This plane was
flying at about the sage speed und altitude, and in about the sume direction
as the other. Its navigation lights were flashing as custowarye 50th
planes disappeared to tha wast. Ihe noise of the supposed airlinor was
just what would be expuctod, so that oy failure to hear the other plane
was not due to my deafness.

| I am naturally puzzled, because of my cany yoars of Air Force piloting,
and ay present connection with aviation that includes a lot of travelling

eas an airline passsnzer.

Are you able to onlighten ae in any way on this subject, even if it
ie only to tell me that 1% involyas «a classified project about which you

cannot furnish information? Your reply will be greatly appreciated.
