1835th AACS, E and I Sq (MATS), AFO 959, dated 26 Aurust 1957, at the time of
the incident. Although the UFOB appeared in the photograph he did not attach
any significance to it until return from TDY. Upon return in general discussion
he was persuaded to report the sighting. Initially it was believed the GCA unit
at Chitose Air Base could confirm the incident. This, however, has provided
nevyative observation by the unit when officially queried. The AC and Ww units
also report no unidentified tracks for the period 0300Z to 0600Z on 1 September
1957 for the Chitose area.

1. The dark blotch on the photographs accompanying the report on the UFO has
these characteristics:
a. It represents an area on the film entirely devoid of detail or ex- |
posure effect.
b. The area has no significant edge.
c. The area is vignetted or has no definite outline.
ad. Proportions indicate the object is a great distance away.
2. If this were a dark flying object, these things would be true:
a. Even if the UFO was jet black as indicated by the print there would
be some detail visible in this area of the film, at the indicated exposure.
b. There would be a more definite outline to the object.
c. If the sky was at all hazy or if the object was a distance away a
dark or a light object would have a tendency to blend into the haze or sky.
3. From these photographs it is concluded that in the processing of this filn,
development in this area was prevented entirely and in the surrounding area partially,
leaving a clear and partially clear area on the film. This area, in printing, al-
lowed the full light of the printer to pass onto the paper and expose it to this de-
gree of black. Cause: Emulsion side of film touching either some part of the tank
or the film during the development.
