these trees were violently whipped about and "bent back and forth in every direction,"
until it seemed that the limbs would be torn off. The cone then resumed its slow .
course and "climbed" a hill - keeping about 30 yards above th ground; but the top
of the hill it rose abruptly Y into the sky and shot oward
the southwest.
No solid "machine" was discerned conical vortex
of red and blue "flame," the point at the top was about 15
feet. The size and shape could not be stated precisely, because some of the "flames"
emerged in all directions from the whirl, but in general i as conical,

only 15 feet above them; so probably the "flames" were not ordinary flamas but some
caused no compass deviation at all. This tends to show that something unusual had

Ouranos investigator from Marseille, and Paul Jaubert, retired magistrate and Ouranos
correspondent for Palalda.
In company with Dr. Marcel Pages, Ouranos investigator Pyrenees-Orientales,
M. Verpillot and I visited the police station at Amelie-les-Bains and informed them
of this sighting, playing Che taped interview with the witnesses for them, The gen-
darmes told us that the Basous enjoy an excrllent reputation in the community, but
expressed surprise that the incident had not been reported to them in the first place.
We explained that this was because the witnesses had feared ridicule; this fear had
been disarmed by the scientific character of our investigation. We assur the police
that, on our request, the were willing to give them a complete report On May

transits, since they are the only planets
nearer the sun than the carth.
Transits of Venus are far more rare, and
there is none in the 20th century. The
last happened on Dec. 6, 1sS2, and the
next will come on June 8, 2004.
Since Venus is considerably larger than
Mercury, as well as nearer to the carth, dur-
ing a transit it can be seen in front of
the sun without the aid of a telescope.
