Director of the Maryland Acadeny of Sciences ,i a aaa, was called. The
Directcr stated that to his Aiea ae nothing unusual in the way of astronomical

to surgest that they may have come from an aircraft.

CCIMENTS of Preparing Officer PROBABLE
1. In the opinion of the Preparing Cfficer, the UFCB sighting was probably
caused by the blinking night lights from one or more of the Andrews AFB jets flying
in the vicinity of Baltimore between the hours of 09/0230Z and 09/0318Z Sept 55.
a. The sequence of changing lights observed from the Glen Burnie GOC
Fost of red to blue to wiite seems to bear a strong resemblance to the night lights
of either an F-00 or an F-086 which blink from red to green to white. These aircraft
were known to have been flying in the area reported on at the time of the sighting.
be None of the evidence collected seems to discredit the possibility
that the lights observed were those of fighter aircraft in the vicinity. °
(1) The speratiens reports from the 95th FIS at Andrews AFB,
| May, ‘a0! established the presence of aircr aft in the vicinity
of the UCB,
(2) The ‘rations Cfficer, 647th AC & Wf Sq confirms the presence |
of o lt-m aircraft am an F-80 in the skies above and to
the th and west of Baltimore at the time of the sichting.
(3) The | -uservers did hear sounds of aircraft in the skies,
while one observer noted aircraft sounds coming from beyond
but in the sane direction as the FCB. |
. ce The foll:. evidence indicates that the lights observed from the
ground might not have tv is from an Unidentified flying Cbject>.
(1) That ...6 of the pilots flying in the vicinity of Baltimore
at ‘ + time of the sighting were able to offer any confirma-
tion on the UFOB,
(2) The peesence of radar confirmation on the Amrews aircraft
and | + lack of it with respect to the UFOB.

COMMENTS of Approving Officer:

Qualifleations: An Air Force Cfficer, alert, intelli gent
and possessing 20/20 vision.
TI. RELIABILITY: Unknown. SCURCE was contacted by telephone.
III. SOURCE's DESC TTON Of SIGHTING: SCURCE was at his residence in Glen
Purnie, Maryland, at 09/0?! ent 55 when he noticed strange lights in the sky which
seemed to be moving in a nor* -northwesterly direction at a moderate speed and an
unknown altitude. He estimated object (s) at an angle of 0° with the horizon,
Later, SCURCE estimated the distance between himself and the object to be anproxi-
mately 5 miles, placing the -htect in the neighborhood of 20,000 feet. The object
seemed neither to gain or !>-* altitude. |
SCURCE recall«' ~ 4t no form or definite body shape was visible at any
time during the sighting of *:2 UFOB. There seemed to be only a confizuration of
blinking lights, though SC'™°* naturally assumed that the lirhts were associated with
a flying object.
The lights ov served by SOURCE and his wife, who saw essentially the same
phenomenon as her husband, !\iiked on successively in the sequence, red to blue to
vhite, at intervals of approximately 5 seconds. The colored lights were never seen
to appear simltaneously. At times the lights appeared to shoot out the sides of the
undiscernable object.
SCURCE mentioned that there were some aircraft in the sky throughout the
neriod of the sizhting and at times soun?s could be heard in reneral direction o7 the
clinking lights, but in his opinion, they were coming fron aircraft considerably
beyond the UFOB.
The Baltimore Filter Center received a call from SCIRCE at 09/02522
informing them of the phenomenon. SOURCE then returned £0 his observation point
cutside his house and continued observing the UFOR, reporting arain to the Filter
Center as it altered its course slightly and a third time at 29/0318% Sent SS to
ssate that the object had sce out of sight
According to SCURCE, no photographs were taken of the UFO8,

II. RELIABILITY: Unimown, SCURCE was contacted by telephone.
III. SOURCE's DESCRIiifet! OF SIGHTING: At 09/02307 Sept 55, just after
having been posted on the iC Lookout station in Glen Burnie, SCURCK noticed a
blinking, flashing phenomenon iu the western sky. SOURCE stated that the lights
apparently were coming from an object at least 5 miles from his station and
flying at an estimated alti'.t« of 5,000 feet.
The condition : ‘i sky was clear and the wind was slight. SOURCE's
first thought was that the ‘set night have been a balloon, but the way it seemed
to follow a consistent path 2nd maintain a constant SLE RUSS shortly precluded
this possiblity.
At 09/0252Z2 S* °°" reported the baffling phenomenon to the Baltimore
Filter Center, after which. e vceturned to his watch and continued tracking the
object. It followed a we3'- r'hwesterly course ari appeared to be losing alti-
tude, which SCURCE attribut* +t» the object's track along the curvature of the
earth.
SCURCE told the investigator that the lights changed color periodi-
cally from red to blue to wii! every few seconds, giving the appearance of a
Streak of light coming fron «he object.
d Aircraft were in the sky at various times throughout the sighting,
but SOURCE felt that nome of these sounds could be associated with the UFOB -
directly. Its speed seemed to rule out the possibility of its being an aircraft.
Occasionally the sound would seem to come from the genes at direction of the UFOB
(roar of alrcraft). However, these aircraft seemed to be mich farther beyond the
UFOB.
SOURCE called in to report that the UFOB had begun to Gs. appear at
09/0310Z Sept 55. No photographs had been taken of the UFOB.
The SOURCE stated that in his opinion, the cbject was probably a
weather balleon. Investigator concluded the interview at this point.

SUPPLEMENTARY INVESTIGATIVE UPTFCRTS:
1. The CAA Tower at Harbor “eld, Maryland (GeoRef GJPK 2318) was called
for information on the UFCB. According to the controller on duty, Mr. NM. H. Brandes,
none of the aircraft flying in the vicinity of Baltinore during the hours of the
UFCB sighting kad noticed anything; unusual in the surrounding sky. In his opinion
had any of the pilots observed an unidentified airborne object it would have been
reported to the control tower. * later check with this installation to determine
whether any blimps or dirigibles had been flying in the area produced a negative
response.
2. & check with the Sir Traffic Control tower at Friendship Field (GeoRef
GJPK 2212) yielied substantially the same results, namely that they had received
no confirmation of an unusual flying object in the vicinity of Baltimore.
32 The Baltimore Filter Center was found to have been res;onsible for
submission of data on the VIP te the 647th AC & WV Sq in Manassas, Virginia, which
prepared the preliminary report. All observers of the object had called in to the
Filter Center to report their si, hting.
le Operations, Gh ‘th AO * W Sq was ecntacted and this installation reported
that in addition te the Prene them aireraft mentioned in their Preliminary Report,

6. The US \eother Bureau at Frieniship Nield was contacted and the officer
on duty state! thet bis station no longer launched meteorological balloons but that
Silver Hill “esther “tation (CeoRef CIPS 0453) near Woshinecton did most of the
