CORENCS of the Preparing Officert
1. It was first believed that , the obieot wee a weather halloon. Checks
vere made with the various reather officos in Newfoundlend, end it vas learnod
that Ernest !srmon AFl releancd a balloon 45 minutes prior to 1 10 of
sighting. V Winds over Harmon weret 2e,o00 feet, 320 dogzees at Pepperrell
AFR is arprotiantely 23o niles EsE of Ermoot Iarmon AlD: those extromely yhigh
vinds were taaveling in the gonerel direction Harnon to Pepperroll. However,
the balloon was trecked for a period or 34 minutes at Harnon. Contaot was loat
with the balloon wben it was 30 niles dietant at 27,3oo foet. 'Sinee the
balloon was of the radiosondo typo, a pocitive burst could not be determined,
althougl anrlysis of returns indicated a probable burst. Morcover, the balloon,
having coneued 34 minutes and gone only 30 miles, would :to travel the
remaining 200 milos in ll minutes, thus eliminating the remaining 200 milos in l1 minutes, thus eliminating the possibility thet the possibility thet the
Harmon balloon accow:ted for tho sighting. Harmon balloon accow:ted for the sighting.
2. A balloon was also rolonsod fron MeAndrew AFB, approviretely 90 miles
southwest of Peprerroll AfB. This balloon was released the night bofore'the
this balloon also could not account for the sighting.
3. It is considered very unlilely thet tbe objsct was an afreraft because
of the long duration of the sighting ord the hovering nature of the objcct. The
possibility of celestial or metcorologioal cenditions causing the sighting does
oxist.
. 4. The Director of: ligence, lEAC velvates this incidont as an uniden-
tified aerial object.

Dear Lt. Olsson,
Now that Jennie has her preliminary clearance, she can help me
handle the reports and can type the letters to you and to your successor.
This will improve the quality of the typing I cannot
guarantee spelling. (keither can I.)
With respect to the two wires you sent us on June 23, there is With respect to the two wires you sent u us on June 23, there is
only one thing to say: The 2l June Pepperrell AFB case must be tossed to say: e2l June Pepperrell AFB case must be tossed

Referring to the follow-up statement on - the l0 June Detroit
case, both Jemnie and I still think this was a landing light and agree
it could not have been a meteor.
Business is a little slow. Jen is going ahead with requesting
cooperation from the air control tower operators. Her usefulness has
increased in view of her temporary clearance and I hope that her full
clearance will not be too long in coming.
I hope we can soon and you a bon voyage into Law
School.
Sincerely,
