New to these onat are of some interest, the most important is 5 Vareh

\ BBCLASSIBIED |
South Carolina Area 9 March 1953
I. DESCRIPTION
ee
At 1545 EST, the Asstatant Director of Security at the Savannah River
Project observed a silver crescent-shaped object visually from the ground for
& period of one hour. This object was at a very high altitude, and very little
information was obtelned through interrogation of the observer.
A Detachment of the 727th AC&W Squadron at Congaree, South Carolina, waa
notified a3 a reault of the above visual sishting. They picked up an unidenti-
Pied plot on thetr AN/ARS ~5 type radar at L7O7 EST that was approximately 05
mlies southwest of Congaree over the Savannah River Project. The Air National
Guard wes notified with the result that an F-51 type aircraft was airborne within
five minutes. The alrcraft attempted interception until 1725 FST when the blip
faded northweat of Congaree. The F-51 returned to its base.
—
Kt 1752 EST ancuther detachment of the 727th AC2W Squadron eat Camden, South
Carolina picked up « bilp on their AN/TPS 1b type redar. At that time an RF-GO0
type alccraft was nciumbied to attempt interception. This unidentified blip
Vas due west of Cor.s:+e, and to be sure he had the unidentified on nla scope,
the operntor had tiv ‘O 49 an identification turn. This proved that he did
not have the F-GoO « scope. When the object was first observed, 1% was
approximately 100 =» «« vest of Congaree. It then reversed ita direction,
end was 85 miles out >eading in a northwest direction, then headed east, then
weat, and again to h# east, fading at 115 miles and 8 degrees from Camden,
For a total of 66 miowtas, during both radar sightings, aircraft attempted to
intercept the uniden*.rted with negative results. At ail times, the object
atayed at an estimarest -0,1100 feet altitude, and was doing 200-220 mph.
II. DISCUSSION
A check was made “o determine if there were any eircratt in the vicinity
with negative resul‘s There is a time lapse between all three sightings
(ground visually at ‘he Gavannah River Project to the Congaree sighting was
22 minutes, and from ©. Congaree sighting to the Camden sizhting was 27 minutes),
causing eome doubt as to whether the three sightings were connected with the sane
object. There was really not enough information contained in the report con-
cerning the sighting at the Savannah River Project. For the observer to see
an object for that long a period, it would have to be traveling at a very sicw
rate of speed and at a very high altitude for the object stayed overhead for the
enSive period. The radar ocoservers were very well qualified in thetr fields,
a 2ir eguipmeat vas ia operating condition. ‘@ radar rng ‘were Sy
+o those made by conventional airernsfrt.
